Somehow, the best computer available to me for general use in my office is a Mac G4 with Mac OS X 10.3.9 on it. So, I’m using the iChat that shipped with that version when I’m at work. However, there is a major problem: The aolsystemmsg that normal notifies you once if you are logged on in two locations (I always leave Pidgin logged in at home) now notifies me every minute! I suspect that the problem may be this version of iChat not allowing multiple simultaneous connections of your screen name to the AIM servers; however, when I get home, it looks as if I never logged off.
Does anyone have any bright ideas – or at least compelling reasons to stop trying to fix this?
*Edit*
Note: I installed AIM for Mac 4.7 and got the same result.
What happens if you don’t leave Pidgin logged in? Also, it is possible the computer in your office cuts the connection off if it goes idle, which causes your client to reconnect automatically and then display this message again.
I think I figured it out. When I got home today, Pidgin displayed a message that my AIM account was deactivated (in Pidgin) for logging in and out too many times in succession. This tells me that iChat and AIM for Mac are forcing all other AIM connections to close, but Pidgin is automatically trying to reconnect immediately. So what I really need is a way for that older version of iChat to allow multiple connections, or a way to disable the auto-reconnect in Pidgin.
Most likely, the best solution will be to just install a third-party program like Adium X in my office which (I hope) allows multiple simultaneous connections.
To answer your question, Cronus, after Pidgin deactivated my AIM account, I stopped receiving IMs from aolsystemmsg.
