MemberI had a SN when I had AOL when they were dial up. Then, I quit AOL. Then, I got AIM. I tried to sign up with MY SN (the one I had on AOL) but it said the SN was already taken!!!
So, it’s like 5 years later and I have had this “person” on my buddylist forever and they have NEVER signed on. I have sent e-mails to them, but… you guessed it… the email was undeliverable as “no such user” or something like that.
How can I retrive the SN that I want??

Participantthe short answer is… you can’t. if it’s taken by someone else and you can’t get ahold of them, you’re out of luck.
just because you’ve never seen them sign on doesn’t mean they don’t use their screenname. some people have their privacy settings such that people not on their list cannot see them online. this is pretty likely — believe me, I’ve been waiting for years for “Tigerblade” to sign onto AIM. Haven’t seen it yet.
The other possibility is that they use it as an alternate screenname and thus don’t use it much. I have a few that I use in circumstances where I don’t want to give away my primary sn. I also never check my AIM Mail for any of them, and a few of them are linked to email addresses that no longer exist. So while I still use those accounts, any email you’d send me there don’t work and would bounce back to you.

MemberTiger – yeah, I understand all that about people having a name they don’t use and all. It’s just that… it’s a pretty specific-to-me sort of thing and I had it once and I find it hard to believe that another person thought it up and created it RIGHT AT THE MOMENT it got re-released.
But anyhow, now that AOL is free I will give them a call and see if a live AOL person can help me.

Participantthe other possibility is that, even though you “quit AOL”, your screenname didn’t get released. just because you’re no longer with AOL doesn’t mean everything related to your account was freed up.
and good luck with your AOL support call… if you can actually talk to a live person.
