MemberHey All,
As a new member here, I’ve seen a lot of neat and useful info on how to do just about everything IM-related. I thought I’d post a new topic and see if anyone is having similar problems or if anyone can help me out with mine. Here goes:
I have a network set up at home. All systems on it are running XPPro. One system shares my ISP connection with all the others via an 8 port switch. I am having all sorts of trouble sending files. I’ve tried with ICQ and MSN through Trillian. The recipient gets a confirmation window, but nothing happens and they get error messages. On my side of the connection, the window just says “trying to establish transfer” and will sit there for as long as I decide to leave it.
The ICS machine on my network does have the firewall activated and turning it off seems to help, but I’d rather not leave my network exposed like that.
Any suggestions? Ideas? I’ve been thinking about getting a DI-607 and using its firewall, so I can turn my ICS system into a file server and have it do nothing else. I’ve heard they do a much better job than XPs. Has anyone heard anything about hardware firewalls for home use? Good or bad opinions welcome! 🙂
Hope to hear from you guys soon!

What exactly do you mean by “it seems to help?” Can you send files when the firewall is turned off? If so, then the problem may lie in your firewall configuration. Are you using XP’s built-in firewall?

I am using XP’s firewall. It find that sometimes files send ok with it off and sometimes they don’t. No mater what I do when it’s on, they don’t send at all.
The fact that whoever I’m sending to gets a Transfer receipt window on their end tells me that it is actually working, but somewhere along the line something is not right since the only thing they do get is a transfer error.
I can recieve files through MSN with the firewall on. Never tried with it off.
I just tried sending a file to a friend on MSN with my firewall off and he got the same thing as before.
