KeymasterI thought BigBlueBall seemed a wee bit slow today. After checking the log files tonight, now I know why. We were mentioned on Slashdot today.
Check out the running commentary that follows the article. It’s fun to see how many people agree that AIM sucks.

Uh…AIM does suck; how is it funny? it’s like a fact.
*watches all the AOL lovers come to flame me; oh wait, nobody likes AOL*

KeymasterThere’s a ton of people who *like* AIM. Which proves that ignorance is indeed bliss.

MemberThe new advertisement system of AOL (installing WildTangent, playing audio advertisements, displaying pop-ups) is for many people a good reason to switch to an alternative. For me, it’s the biggest drawback on newer versions of AIM.

MemberDon’t update to the newer versions then. 😉

I’m sure that soon they will force us to use newer versions.
AIM is ok if you have Trillian Pro 2.0 though!

Participantyeah AIM sucks, this is a known fact. unfortunately it has a lot of users, a lot of which are unfortunately too dumb to realize that there are alternatives. since its used so much, new users decide to go with AIM instead of some other app. vicious circle. its so easy to use, no wonder its number 1. yeah no wonder. 🙁 but people dont want to pay for this stuff (me included) and would rather go without anything than pay for it, so we’re stuck using stuff like AIM (although i’m using MSN too, and plan to move to Miranda once i get back to a highspeed connection to DL it)

MemberIt is great to know that so many people visit our site and pay attention to our articles. Hopefully in the future we’ll get posted about at /. even more and more visitors will come in.
The only reason AIM is so popular is because AOL had been around for so long that eventually people moved to broadband and wanted to keep their screen names and contact with their friends. So they would move their AOL screen names over to AIM and keep their contact with others while using a new internet connection. That got the whole progam popular in the first place, and then since everybody was already using the instant messenger then more people started registering because everyone they knew used AIM. Just look at the AIM software, it is full of ads and banners and other things to try and advertise to you. It doesn’t allow you to allow or deny someone from adding you to their buddy list and it has the warning feature. Don’t even get me started about the warning system, IT WAS THE WORST THING AOL COULD HAVE PUT INTO THE PROGRAM..

Memberooh..i’m on the same page with you on that one. warning system sucks.
and, i mean, once you hit 100%, you dont even get booted off.
i tried convincing my friends to switch to Yahoo or MSN, but they were all too ignorant to listen. Once something monopolizes, they’re pretty much there for good.

MemberI don’t like the warning system either, and they should really implement some sort of IP banning… I’m on cable, and would not use AOL as my service provider… bleh, plus their browser takes up too much space on the screen.
About the Messenger Client, as I said, they should put IP banning there, and get rid of the warning system
It’s not that bad after you mod it…
