MemberI have a problem at one time a person I knew had a stalker, this person infected their computer with a keylogger. This person has been harassed and stalked for many years. Their conclusion is always the same after replacing hardrives, software( new ) wiping older drives, deleting ALL documents, pictures, etc ( that was infected)and never replacing them. Their conclusion is the person has/ was finding them through yahoo messenger. Somehow they are able to find out every single id my friend creates. To the point he is even harassing others who might use the computer ( children).
My friend was told that all they have to do to get rid of the stalker is never chat again on IM. Especially Yahoo messenger. I just can’t believe this is true. If you change isp’s, wipe hardrives( 35 times over ) never use anything that was/is infected. How on earth can this person still find them on yahoo ? My friend was told by stalker( they created an id with this answer in it ) Never chat again. My friend seems to be free of the stalker as long as they don’t IM. I told them that until they are completely rid of the stalker/ harasser that whatever they are using to hunt them down is leaving them suseptable to whoever else is mischievious.
They have win xp home edition norton internet security 2006 firewall/anti-virus zone alarm 2006 no trojans have been found, no keyloggers but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t gained administrative rights & able to take control without being detected.
Any one have any suggestions that I might use to help them be free and get their privacy back ?
I put it in this area because although it has to do with Yahoo messenger it also has to do with security. If I’m wrong, you’ll have to excuse me for putting it in the wrong place.

MemberYou did indeed place this in the right area. I have never heard of such a tenacious stalker. Is this person SURE that the stalker is not some one known to them? I mean, it could be some one they know. And sometimes, even though a hard drive is wiped, it does not mean the information or what ever might be there is gone completely. Has this person tried a completely NEW hard drive/mother board OR creating a Yahoo! ID (a fresh one…not an alias) on a friend’s PC and ONLY using it there to see what happens?

MemberWell ‘known’ only in the sense they were met through YIM. My friend got a new isp and kept the old one on two completely different computers. They would surf on the new one and chat and play on the old one. On the new one Yahoo Messenger was not installed at all. On the old one it didn’t seem he knew any places the new isp was surfing. A few days ago my friends daughter wanted to chat with her friend on YIM. They made a new id ( remember this is on the computer that was without YIM) they downloaded YIM and once again he was back to harassing them on the New ISP.
I have to wonder since yahoo and all chat related programs use a certain port to chat on is it possible he is getting to them through this port?
If so, is it possible to switch to a different port? My friend says they are positive he didn’t know anything from the new computer because no ids were used to harass them were made of places they had surfed or things they had done on the new computer , Until they downloaded and started using YIM and Windows Live Messenger.
I feel sorry for this person because the child involved is in an advanced class where they do things over the summer, the school involved sets up email addresses and chat names so that they may keep in touch with others involved in the program when the program ends for that summer. The child is not able to participate in any of this because of the stalker/ harrasser.
Is there any other solution? There has to be some way to get rid of him for good. These people are not rich and cannot afford to replace all hardrives.
Its horrible how people abuse computers and others this way. All matters of privacy are gone. And the one being abused is the one who has to start over and get rid of everything. I wish, Microsoft would make something in all of their windows programs that would log/ or catch the person doing this and block them somehow. Until then my friend is left in limbo, wondering what to do next.

MemberIf he is harassing a CHILD especially and keeping her from education, get the police involved. Don’t let this guy ruin her learning experiences. At the very least they may be able to give her some ideas on what to do. You don’t want to get this obvious loon upset, but your friend and her daughter should not have to live a “partial” life because of him. Contact law enforcement and find out what your options are.

MemberHas this person tried using a different IM such as AIM or ICQ? If so, do they still have problems with the stalker? If they have used one of these other IM’s and have no problem, then it’s pretty good odds that he doesn’t have admin. control of the computer. If he did, he would know about the other IM’s. Also… Is your friend logging on under invisible, and making sure friends can’t see her playing games, etc, etc?

MemberSame thing has happened to me. Stalker for years and now harrassing, terrorizing, slanderizing, malicious behavior..I just want to know exactly who they are so I can stop them. I know there is a program out there somewhere that actually traces Yahoo Aliases. I need help so I can sleep at night. This person has threatened to kill my family, rape me, and then kill me. He has my phone number that another chatter threw in a chatroom, just because they’re mean so this person was able to find my phone number. Someone please help..I’m scared. I’ve already been to the police and I’ve even gotten in touch with Yahoo. Neither will do anything to help me unless I can come up with the original user ID.

MemberAll these sad stories about this type of thing happening through instant messenging. Luckily, nothing like this has happened to me, but one note to the original poster, sometimes certain malicious software can slip through reformations, or so I’ve heard. So if you tried it with an entirely different hard drive, or even use another messenging program. Try that. 🙂

Memberif there is something in the first block of data on the drive, it could survive a drive format – when you overwrite a drive 35 times, it takes ages and ages, and ought to get rid of everything, but unless the drive is totally wiped clean, you might not have got rid of the malicious data
Iolo do a Drivescrubber as part of their System Mechanic (and there are other similar utilities available), this can totally wipe a drive – after that, you do need to be able to set the drive up again with a partition so you can install a system on it, and you can do this if the PC still has a floppy drive, and you have a floppy disk, and it is a boot disk from windows 95, 98 or Millennium, then you can set the BIOS to boot from A: and run FDISK to rewrite the data that is potentially corrupted, and then do a clean install of whatever version of windows you are using*another thing is, that you need to get your security set up, and up to date, before you go anywhere near any Instant Messenger, and also, you should change your login password, and NOT tick the box to ask for it to be remembered! this is mildly inconvenient, but there are programs that can access the stored password hash on your system, and it is only a matter of time for a determined stalker to decode the hash, and they can then steal your identity
*get someone who KNOWS what they are doing to help you with this, if what i have said above is all Greek to you – and good luck!
