ParticipantI am starting to get into strategy games, especially ones that involve battling. I recently tried this freeware game called NetStorm, and it’s really fun (Unless you’re losing). It has online multiplayer mode and all that fun stuff. It also has graphics that let you see all the action and what’s going on.
I am thinking about buying a good game of this genre. What is a very good battle/strategy game?

ParticipantPersonally, I’ve always loved the classic War Craft, Red Alert kind of games. …They’re starts right? *blink blink* I hope so because gosh I’d feel like a dolt then. Either way, yeah…I’m not huge on strategy because it gives me a headache some of the time and I have to play mass amounts of hack and slashers like Gauntlett to get my mind off them. Anywho…I also liked Black and White, which is a hack and slash and strat, in my opinion…
But console wise, I can never ever get enough of Final Fantasy, Tactics. *purrrrr* Word.

MemberThe classic’s are obviously the Warcraft/Starcraft and Command and Conquer Series… you can’t really go wrong with most of those titles.
The Age of Empires series is also up there.
The best fairly recently released titles are probably Warcraft 3 and Command and Conquer: Generals… and for older games you can’t go wrong with Age of Empires 2.
That said Age of Empires 3 is coming out at the end of summer and that will probably be the king of online games for a while…
Rome: Total War and it’s prequels are also good, though Rome isn’t very good online.
@ Querty Do you mean rise of nations? empire earth?

MemberI’ve never been a huge fan of strategy games, but I’ve got to agree on Age Of Empires. Ever since the first one it’s been a game which I’ve always liked, and am looking forward to the release of AOE III, which looks excellent.

ParticipantI’m thinking that Command and Conquer: Red Alert is what I might get, but I’m still debating. Also, that game is several years old, so I hope it would work with Windows XP. It’s not like age matters that much though.
I would rather have something that has graphics like this:

Nothing too fancy. And as for graphics like this:

Well, I think my video card could handle that OK too, though still, I want nothing too fancy that would distract from the object of the game.Age of Empires looks pretty cool too, but I’m not sure if I really like medieval themes. Something with a mythical/fantasy theme might be kind of cool, and of course I also like the more modern realistic theme such as the Command and Conquer games.

MemberWell I can assure you that Red Alert 2 works fine with XP, so you needn’t worry on that score. I’m not sure how active the multiplayer aspect is these days however, but you will probably be able to find some people still playing it.
Age of Mythology has a fanatsy/mythological theme to it… but I never really liked it…
However I have to agree with martin in that the age of empires series is amazingly good.
You might want to have a look for demo’s of said games to see which you like best… i know age of empires 2 had an excellent demo which let you explore lots of features… and i think play online, ableit in a limited form.

ParticipantAlright, I walked down to the Super Target this morning and bought Starcraft, and it’s awesome. Though it’s several years old, that doesn’t matter. That just means it’s a lot cheaper, and it even came with an expansion pack and both of the strategy guides (All only about 20 bucks).
It’s interesting because it involves a lot more interaction than most strategy games I have played. Which I guess is a plus. 🙂

I love real-time strategy games, but they are getting somewhat repetitive. The oldest one I have played is Dune 2000, and it is almost the exact same as all of the new games; the only difference is the characters are obviously different, and the graphics have been improved.

KeymasterI played StarCraft once and I really didn’t get into it even though it is similar to Red Alert 2 in my opinion. Anyway I got way more into Red Alert 2 and now into Command and Conquer Generals and Zero Hour. I can never get enough of those games. Playing skirmish missions against the computer is just plain fun, and online play roooooocks.

KeymasterAgain on the subject of strategy games. I came across this one and it’s pretty neat. I like it. You might want to check it out and it’s free to play as well.

ParticipantI never really was a fan of strategy games but I was impiressed by Age of Empires II. It must be cause I get excited with everything that has to do with medieval 😀

MemberI still like Age of Empires II better than III but maybe that’s because I’m a big fan of movies like Braveheart and The Messenger :p
