ParticipantThe AIM client has never been all that great, but it worked. AIM versions before the first 5.5.x’s weren’t that bad, sure they installed those annoying AOD AOL icons on your desktop, start menu and favorites list, but it’s free software, that should be expected.
But then came those audio ads, for me, that crossed the line, I will not ever use AOL instant messenger again.
But it gets worse! Then they added Wild Tangent and this games crap, does anyone really want that? Sure, there are people that play games, but I think we can all find our own flash games.
And now Weather bug, ad-delivery software, I can go to the weather channel if I want to know what the current and forcasted weather is, I don’t need it on my desktop.
There are other options, Gaim, Trillian, NAIM, etc. I think this marks the true downfall of AOL’s AIM. What’s everybody else think?

MemberNot just AIM, the AOL browser will kill the company itself. I actually tried to go to AIM.com with the AOL browser when I was messing around with a trial and the browser crashed. How can you run a good company when your own websites crash your software, lol.
And yes, your right, their AIM software sucks now. But the most upsurd thing is that even with all this crap, they still don’t provide tech support.
But I do like AIM still, and will continue to use it, because of Addons. I can use AIMutation and Otsego.
Aimutation gives me tabbing, ad-removal, buddylist docking, button removal, logging etc. And Otsego gives me things like ghosting at sign on, fake mobile, fake encryption, talking while away, etc.
Addons make up for everything that AIM doesn’t have.

MemberYeah, AIM gets worse and worse. There’s too much crap on it.
Fortuneately, there’s other good clients to use, such as Trillian and Miranda IM.June 6, 2004 at 7:33 pm #44020Hurricane22491
MemberI think AOL is really messing themselves up. Maybe after they hear all these complaints with 5.5, they’ll take the problems out. But maybe not. I only use AIM because that’s what most people use.

MemberI would be very happy using another Instant Messenger (MSN, etc.) but most people use AIM.
Gaim doesn’t work to well with direct connect and file transfer.
I don’t really like Trillian. (just a personal preference)
And I can’t stand MirandaIM. I don’t know why, it’s just the feeling I get.June 6, 2004 at 7:41 pm #44019Tigerblade

hahahahahahahahahahahahaha good one… good one. not. aol wont do anything about it cause its free. no matter how sucky it is, people still use it all the time… they have absolutely no reason to do anything about it

Memberok…i dont get the problem really. all the things that you mentioned could b turned off. when you install AIM, there’s a checkbox on wheather you want WeatherBug, and you can turn off AIM.com coming up. as for advertisments, theres plenty of software to deal with that, and a manual way, too

Memberwhen you install AIM it asks you if you WANT to install those programs, and to get rid of the noise adds, just get AIM+ or download a expression, if your still not satisfied, download a lower version, thats why http://oldversion.com “the newer version isnt always better”

MemberMax: I recall an older build of 5.5 didn’t ask you to install the crap. I prefer GAIM because it just works– unless run in Windows, then direct connection doesn’t work…
AOL is going down, has been, and just take a look at the market share…goin’ down down down

MemberYeah, I agree that AIM is definitley going downhill. I don’t like any of the 5.5 versions at all so I just stick with the 5.2.

MemberI think AIM has been going down hill since 4.8 when they removed the Edit list tab on the buddylist and added AIM Expressions, I asked the aim developers for AIM Skins, not AIM Expressions, I also asked for built in cloning….and they made Linking….They take my idea’s and make them crappy as hell. I’m not suggesting anymore ideas to them….They don’t seem to get what people really want.
June 9, 2004 at 4:41 pm #44024_Max_
MemberI’m sure your not the only one whos requested that. Theres millions of people who use AIM. I personally think linking is stupid too, because if you have a friend overand they want to go on there screenname too, then there screennames saved to yours and yours is saved to theres and then you have to unlink it and it just gets all confusing! Thats why I use Ostego for cloning.

MemberAIM is going downhill. I much perfer using Yahoo and MSN but since most of my friends only use AIM, I still have that. The only things I really like about AIM is the subprofiles and all the add ons.

KeymasterI agree. With every new release, I dislike AIM more and more. Off to MSN for me.
