KeymasterWelcome to BigBlueBall… Great question about inserting smileys without keying them in. Of course, you have to do something to put them in. They don’t want to make it too easy, or else they wouldn’t be “secret,” would they?
In MSN Messenger there is a third-party addon called Messenger Plus that lets you assign any keystroke combination (sentence, paragraph, etc.) to a hot key. I don’t know if there’s a similar tool for Yahoo Messenger, but I think that’s what you’re looking for, right?

ParticipantTheres another secret smiley not many people know about. In September 2001, Yahoo released Yahoo Messenger v5001015 (beta), and of course there were new secret smileys hidden in it, but what many didnt know was that there was one Smiley,
. This ghost doesnt have any actual key commands and isnt programmed into the messenger so it’s basically usless. Yahoo then released v5001029 in where the ghost was replaced with the malicous *ooo scary* pumpkin
. Woohoo May the Ghost Smiley RIP. hehe.

KeymasterThat’s a good one, Windahoner.
Yeah, the ghost smiley disappeared completely. If you don’t have the older version of Yahoo, you won’t even find the file on your system. Maybe it’ll be resurrected sometime in the future!

MemberGood morning children, I’m Miss rusty.
Did you like the lesson from Mr chewy?
Oh.
Did you see the naughty pics?
No?
And who thinks naughty pics belong on public forums?
Uh huh, nobody.
What did we learn from this lesson?
Yes, not to f** oops, not to mess with stuff we dont understand.
Did we learn anything else children?
Yes, we learned that some add-on’s aint worth a pinch of sh** oops, salt.
Anything else?
6 posts to make a point is a waste of time?
Very good.
You may all go out and play now, remember not to be rude to other people.Miss rusty.

KeymasterChewy, in general, do not post links to images that you do not own or host on your own website (and therefore have control over them). Other sites really do not like when another site “uses” images from their site. When someone loads this page, the images you inserted are pulled from their server, consuming bandwidth and server resources, but providing no value to them at all.
It’s better to provide some descriptive text and a link to their site. If you think it’s worthy, you can even submit the URL to the link directory here on the BigBlueBall.
You might say something like: “This cool site, http://www.example.com, has lots of great pics that they will let you use to spice up your Yahoo instant messages. They’ve got flags from most countries around the globe, and other, more R-rated stuff. Check it out!”
That way, you’re linking to their website rather than hijacking their content (the images). They get the benefit of added traffic, this page loads faster, people still get your message. Sounds good?
The other point… I never saw the images titled “male” or “female” (they were broken), but if they were nasty, I’d have removed them anyway. You can link to something like that (with a warning), but BigBlueBall isn’t the place for “nasty” images. Sorry, but there already are plenty of “those” places out there.

One final note, if you have some images you want to share, I will consider hosting them here (like the Yahoo smileys in the first post in this topic). Just send me an email or private message.

MemberThank you Miss Rusty, very good lesson for us all. And I must say, you were very polite in the delivery of your lesson points. I learned that I tend to get very very bored after I hear the same lesson plan repeated several times. We all use smileys, and I have alot of fun with them IF I am in a good mood, but for goodness sakes,,, nasty ones? The only one I saw listed that sounded interesting and one that Im sure I would use was the Kiss the ass thing.
lol
Now, I am ready for recess, and what tyme is snack,,,,, Im starved…
oops, I mean talk to the ass,,, not kiss the ass, but I do like that one better. 🙂 Does this mean I get a F for paying attention in class?
