MemberThere are some ways people can find out what ISP (Internet Service Providers) you are using… Like if you have sent that person an E-mail, they could see your IP (Internet Proctool) Addresses. Or, they could get your IP/Network Address through file sharing (or whatever that is called) via Yahoo Messenger [if you use such]. It is not that hard to get IP/Network Addresses. 🙂

KeymasterNot really. They could complain to your ISP if you did anything bad, but I’m sure you’re not, right? 🙂

ParticipantIf they have your ISP, they probably have your IP. God knows what they can attempt this this lil number. I suggest picking up a firewall if you dont already have one.

Good Zone Alarm has been what Ive found to keep me safest over the years.
But it’s not so much that they can hack you easier with your IP as more of what Jeff said:

In addition to that, they can go hack a site or someones PC and use your IP as the one doing it. Which results in you getting the blame. Id let my ISP know someone was able to tell me my ISP and you worry they have your IP. They can assist you in your options. Or any concerns they might have.
PS.

ParticipantI wouldnt be worried about them contacting your ISP. Contacting a ISP about reporting, is like trying to get Mr. gares home email address.
Id be more worried about the lil bastards shooting out trojans, and such, which is very easy with just a IP. Or even just screwing you, ex, opening your CD ROM, or making your printer print out what every they wish. Keep your firewall active.October 5, 2003 at 8:06 pm #54979Johnson
MemberIf someone told you your isp, big freaking deal, I have used this trick to mess with people, and some are dumb enough to be worried about some type of threat, if i was you i would not mess with any firewalls, maybe if you are on cable an have a descent computer i would, they will just be that much more junk on your computer. When people get a firewall, in my experience, it tends to make them more paranoid, because every IP on the internet is constantly being probed, and they will think that someone is attacking them. Odds are if anything bad gets into your system, the firewall won’t stop it. I would recommend using an anti virus though, they can actually be useful, i personally have been targeted many times by hackers, who have wanted to break into my computer, and i do not use a firewall, and i have had zero problems, if i thought you needed a firewall, i would give you one to go d/l, but i just don’t see the need for it. If this person was going to do something, why would they tell you your isp? That makes no sense whatsoever, it tells you how big of an idiot they really are.

MemberI would have to agree with Johnson on this one. If the person was going to do something to you or your computer, they would not tell you about it, they would just do it. I think this person is someone who knows very little about what can be done with an IP address and is out to scare people who don’t know any better. My advice to you is to tell him/her that he’s an idiot, and ignore them.

MemberI agree with both Johnson and Hellsfury I know Im new here ( this forum ) but not to the net . if your really worried about someone hacking you pc disable file and print sharing heres how :to disable file sharing goto /start > control panel > network connections > depending on how you connect to the net Dialup / dsl .cable .> right click properties uncheck file and printer sharing > click ok your done close the open windows BTW this is the easiest hack their is .

MemberAlso If someone tells you hey your ip is *** *** *** *** and its really your ip address just say yes and you point is. they are telling you that to scare you just knowing someones IP address is like knowing your user name, they cant really do anything with it .
