MemberGood post there, Link!
Welcome to the Big Blue Ball. 🙂I wonder if this is a problem just with YM, or your sound card in general ?
(Can you record/play ok using Sound Recorder – under Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment ?)And it probably won’t help, but have you gone to Preferences in YM then Calling & Audio, and Call Setup Assistant ?
(Also while you’re there, try changing the 3 options at the top, IF any alternatives are listed).Let’s know how it goes – Rome wasn’t built in a day 😉

MemberThank You for the welcome Eagle_Kiwi and I will start with your first question. The answer is no I have not be able to get the sound recorder to work. I read in my manual that came with the computer that more than one program is using the sound card and have never been able to do anything more than use my speakers for music or movies. The manual mentions have line 1 in line 2 running here very confusing but I did as was instructed but still no change. So if i can use my speakers does that meaan my sound card is good? It’s like the solution has to do with switching to the program that you want to use but xp is new to me and i must admit confusing. I feel like I aam rambling but i’m trying to give you as much information as I am aware of. I have the speaker cord hooked up on the back of the computer as well as the microphone cord. It seems like the microphone is not being picked up by the computer. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome.Again Thank You

MemberYou ramble a bit, yes.. but… again lots of good info in there!
(Don’t be afraid to press ENTER at the end of a sentence when you’re posting – a bit of space makes for much easier reading).I’d say now, forget about voice on YM – just focus on getting it working in Sound Recorder (which is much much simpler) then when that’s done YM will almost certainly follow automatically.
The fact that your speakers DO play music etc means almost certainly your sound card is fine.
I think the problem is some other (sound) program running, which commandeers your sound card.
Rather than some complicated type of “switching” (I’m not even sure if that’s possible) try to find and EXIT the other program before testing voice.And/or try closing every other program you can see, then as a final check do Ctrl-Alt-Del and look at Applications. End Task ANYTHING in the Applications window (but NOT in the Processes one!) THEN try loading Sound Recorder.
And only if/when you DO get to record and play in S.R. do you then go back and try in YM.

MemberI spent two months with techs and they could not give me the answer to Sound Recorder not working! This is what I discovered on my own and it now works great. There is a two fold problem I was having with choppy voice too, Hope it helps you, Tom
THIS ALSO FIXED THE “CHOPPY VOICE” I WAS GETTING IN MY YAHOO VOICE RECORDED MESSAGES!!!!!!!
This also effects (But fix’s) the sound recorder because i could not talk (record) into it, because of this fix! First make sure you have the “mic” tab at the top middle of volume control screen, if it is not there then do this >>
Bring up volume control screen by clicking twice real fast on the left mouse button, then click on properties, scroll down and put a check mark in the empty “mic” box. Now it will appear on the volume control screen. Next to fix the mic so it works right, and people can hear you, do this >>
Left click real fast twice on the left mouse button, that brings up “volume control screen, then click on “options” at top left and on the dropdown menu put a check mark next to “advanced controls” then go back to the “mic” setting on the volume control screen and this time you will see an “advanced” tab at the bottom of mic setting, click on “advanced” and you will see “advanced controls” for mic screen, then go down to the bottom left and “uncheck” the “2 AGC” box but leave the “1 20dB boost” box checked.
This is why you can hear others when on your computer but they cannot hear you fix.
But if you cannot hear sounds from yahoo alerts or sound recoder or someone you are talking to on yahoo voice, then go to volume control, click on “advanced” and “uncheck” the 1 AGC box.Hope the words are not too big, I cannot see as I use too

Memberokay Eagle_Kiwi and tomsbbb i used both of your comments and I am further than I was but still not able to record
I can go into the sound recorder and get it to play a sound already in the system and tomsbbb you were a great help the mic was not on my volume window and when i got it up it was muted thank you
now here is where I am now I have a headset it has the green jack for the volume and a pink one for the mic I have them plugged into the back of the computer I can still get volume but mic still does not work
so in trying to find the box I was going to get input on I discovered that right clicking volume you get two options i chose adjust audio properties once there I had a choice of five tabs under the voice tab is voice playback and voice recording
the voice recording has a drop down box with four options i went through them using the test hardware button at the bottom and got the mic and sound to work using the paragraphs they said to use the one that worked was Back Line in/Mic, Front Line in
so my mic worked and I could hear myself reading the paragraph but I still can not get the sound recorder to record and i haven’t tries yahoo voice as I see no sense because the recorder won’t record I will try yahoo voice PLEASE KEEP THE HELP COMING YOU BOTH HAVE GOT ME THIS FAR AND I AGREE EAGLE_KIWI IF YOU DON’T ADDRESS THE MAIN PROBLEM WHICH SEEMS TO BE THE RECORDER THEN I WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE PROBLEMS
not yelling there just wanted to let you all know I am greatful for your help and I see where spacing helps Thank You

MemberGreat! Obviously heading in right direction, but just not “there” yet. 😉
Some assorted comments:Headset: I guess you need the headset as that’s where your mic is, but you don’t “need” the earphones part of it (assuming your PC has normal speakers). So I’d suggest while testing anyway keep the pink MIC plug in, but don’t use the green plug – just leave the original speakers plug in that socket, so you hear anything thru your speakers instead of having to actually wear the headset. Later once all is working you can choose whichever way you want to listen at the time.
Mic Boost: (or sometimes called “20db Gain”, I think). This is a check box you’ll probably see (assuming your sound card supports it) in the Advanced Controls for Mic window. It’s best to always have the check mark in it.
Great that now the mic “works” in that test mode – but why not then in Sound Recorder ?
You should be able to open SR, click the red circle (record) button, speak into mic, and see the green line responding to the sound. If it does, then you’re almost there – but if green line stays flat and motionless while you talk, that’s a bad sign.
If it stays flat, try getting REAL close gto your mic, and SHOUTING into it, while watching green line. Any movement at all there ?? Let’s know thus far. . .
