ModeratorWell, Chinese New Year will be coming soon, on February 7, 2008. While Western Astrology is based upon the months of the year, Chinese Astrology is based upon a twelve year lunar cycle. Your sign is determined by the year in which you were born. Each sign and those born under it, are represented by one of twelve animals, and are ascribed a set of attributes the Chinese believe comprise the nature of each particular animal.
Legend has it the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac were chosen by Buddha. When Buddha was near death he invited all the animals to visit him. Only 12 came: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, in that order. For visiting him, Buddha honored each by using them to represent the 12 phases of the Zodiac.
One of the most interesting uses of the Chinese Zodiac is exploring the compatibility of signs. This site provides an opportunity for finding a chinese zodiac match, your sign, and the characteristics of each animal. For instance, I was born in the year of the Rat, so I’m naturally a Rat (ah, I love saying that).
Famous Rats include Louis Armstrong, Shirley Bassey, Marlon Brando, Doris Day, Clark Gable, Hugh Grant, Charlton Heston, Gene Kelly, Glenda Jackson, Kris Kristofferson, Gary Lineker, Sean Penn, Burt Reynolds, Olivia Newton-John, Tommy Steele, Donna Summer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Kim Wilde, Haydn, Mozart, Tchaikovsky.
Have fun, and remember, don’t take it too seriously :p

MemberOhh interesting one Philip. I was born the year of the Goat: Yeah I kick ass and eat anything, hehe. According the the chinese this is me!
“They are considered patient and like to exercise moderation and caution in all aspects of their lives. They can bear great pressure and remain stable. Can be very hard workers accomplishing much and can easily take on more than their load. Often they will remain in the background of an endeavor not needing to hog the limelight. Good team workers. Their steadfastness makes them very reliable. In love they tend towards a partner who will protect them and give them space for their creativity. They can have careers in the arts, research, outdoor work, emergency relief work, in libraries or in design.”
So tell me Philip do us goats and rats get on? 😉

ParticipantWhAt????? No polar bears in the zodiac? What kind of scientific system is this? I of course am a Tiger
“Assertive, Adventurous, Independent, Inventive, Generous, Restless and Impulsive. Honest, Dependable, Diligent, Perceptive, Selfless, Caring, Moody, Fun-loving, Adventurous.
Charismatic and self-assured, Tigers were born to lead. This gives them an air of authority most find hard to resist. They are charming and fun, yet never lose sight or stop pursuing their goals or relinquish control. The Tigers’ courage is without limit and they rarely lose a fight regardless of the arena. The Tiger is the king of seduction. They are dignified and affectionate. The primal nature of their being makes them very attractive to almost all. Tigers are moody and can strike at those around them without warning. A Tiger’s feelings run deep and are extraordinarily intense. They do not handle stress well and can be overly emotional. An angry Tiger is something to fear. Tigers are often excessive in their behavior and a little moderation could go a long way in making them happier. When Tigers remain centered and focus their energy on worthy pursuits they will achieve great things.”
Ummm . . . ok. hehe

ParticipantYou’d think I should be a Tiger, but… no such luck.
I’m also a Rat, Philip, as evidenced by the striking accuracy of the description:
Quote:The Rat is a charming creature capable of captivating almost anyone.January 8, 2008 at 1:15 am #165997Nessa
ParticipantI thought I used to be a Tiger (from looking at an old chinese Zodiac calender) but turns out I’m an Ox.

Quote:Rats are very curious about everything, and are always on the hunt for new information—anything that may be of use to them in the present or future. That’s probably why I am a scientist ;p
