I would assume it’s a pump/valve that will be for outdoor water use…especially since he’s standing outside when the photo was taken.
Jeff’s had us digging our minds badly, whoever is the winner he/she deserves at least a t-shirt with all that effort! =p

Rain Bird® 1″ Automatic Anti-Siphon Valve 😀
Upon further research… It’s a one-way valve with a garden hose attachment. Jeff got something like a water bed or a large aquarium to fill. HowStuffWorks explains this in-depth.
Edit: Looking back at the oroginal question of “What is Jeff Holding?”, well, it would be a Rain Bird Automatic Anti-Siphon Valve with standard garden hose adapter. I think that answers the question, does it not?
And the answer is… (drumroll…………..)
Spike was pretty darn close. It’s a 3/4″ Rainbird automatic anti-siphon valve, coupled with a filter and a pressure regulator — all part of a drip irrigation system I installed in my backyard planter areas. Where I live, if you don’t have automatic sprinklers, plants tend to die rather quickly.
I’ll post an “as-installed” picture tomorrow (wouldn’t come out too well at 1:42 AM). 😉
