MemberOk, I am interested in getting some opinions on my website. Like what do you think of the layout/design, does it look good or like crap? I’m looking for some constructive critisism.
I am also looking for authors or people to contribute more content to the site, so if you are interested please let me know.
I apoligize for the shameless plug 😮

MemberI think you should rethink your color “scheme”. Find one that matches within itself a bit better.

MemberI was going to say the same, you should re-choose your colours, they are ok for a while…but if you try to read couple of articles, as I did, your eyes hurt in the end (actually what I finally did was select the whole article so I could read it better).
Didn´t you try plain white over black?

ParticipantI lasted about 5 seconds. I couldn’t read anything. Those colors just won’t work my friend. Stay away from blazing neon colors for text. Its best to have as much contrast as possible between the text and background so users don’t have to strain there eyes. Black text on a white background is the optimum choice for reading.

MemberI’m assuming you took the guys advice and changed your colors because today it was totally legible and easy to read. Not a bad start at all! Kept me occupied while sitting here bored at work :p

I think its better, but it is still hard to read the side, with the orange on grey.

MemberSerioulsy, just start over with your colors. Think of it this way: Would you go out in public wearing an outfit that consisted of all those colors/patterns? If yes, then I can’t help you.

Memberhellsfury_25m, here’s what I always do when I have to make up a color scheme for a site:
open an image editing program that will allow working in layers (that would be almost all image editing programs, such as Adobe PhotoShop, Corel PhotoPaint, or Jasc PaintShop Pro), or a vector image program (like Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Macromedia Fireworks which I prefer as you can use it to design the entire site quite easily).
Then just start with a couple rectangles that are both seperate and overlap eachother. Then start with a background color which you apply to the canvas. Next is to pick the base color which you make sure stands out against the background color. Then just add colors as you go. Try to keep the number of colors low (around four is always safe) in the beginning. You will add more as you start adding text to the site and find you need to let things stand out more than the rest.September 15, 2003 at 12:54 pm #90688hellsfury_25m
MemberOk I re-worked my color scheme. I didn’t realize it was that hard on the eyes. Hopefully my new color scheme is a little bit easier on the eyes. I appreciate the constructive critisism. Thanks for taking the time to tell me what you think.

ParticipantMight want to re-think it again, the dark red is hard, and maybe you should stick to one color, such as a normal blue. That might be better

MemberQuote:quote: I think you should rethink your color “scheme”. Find one that matches within itself a bit better.I could not have put it better………. you seem to be using colors simply because they are available.
It WILL put your readers off.. nobody wants to get a headache reading a ‘over colored’ site.. they simply move on.
You need to understand colors………
Go to a paint supply store… ask for a color wheel.. it shows ‘primary’ colors and their complimentary colors… practise using them.. keep it simple, no excessive change of hue or intensity…. lose the black background… it never works well on the web.Example……….. gray background… blue text. the mouse over should be green.. NOT bright yellow as used…….
Example…… black central background with gray background side panels does not compliment each other, use white central background, try it.
Practise, n prolly get a color test…. you may be slightly color blind… dont be disturbed by this.. 20% of people are, 15% of males are red-green color blind.
You may well be male, and red-green color blind. Oops! I read your bio, yr prolly NOT color blind. 😮September 15, 2003 at 8:54 pm #90686Tigerblade
Participantas a graphic designer slash webpage designer, here’s my suggestion (as always, only a suggestion, its your website not mine):
background color: light grey, otherwise light something else, maybe a faded form of dark green (if that makes sense, something along the lines of #669966 – its a semi-dark greenish color
main text color: either dark grey or black, or if you choose some other color, make it a dark color. no bright reds, etc.
links: still semi-dark color, i’d suggest maybe a dark red? dark blue? the mouseover color can be something funky like orange or flourescent green though
headings: something similar to your main text color, maybe just a wee bit different. like if your main text is black, have the headings be dark grey… too much of a difference can be a bad thing
background emphasis: like for the sides where you have extra links listed, something just a tad darker than your main background. if you go with something like a light grey (maybe #cccccc), go with something like #888888 for your emphasis. of course the links on that color will have to be lighter. one touch i’ve found to work well is having the links on that different background be the same color as the background (if that doesnt make sense, ask and i’ll clarify the best i can)

MemberThanks for all of the suggestions guys. I personally like darker colors, but that is obviously not going to work on the web. So I will go back to the drawing board and come up with a more standard color palette. When I started off, I just wanted to have a site that looked a little different from your “typical” website. Probably went a bit too far with the dark colors. Anyway, I greatly appreciate all of the input you have given me on the site, and I’ll see if I can normalize the color scheme.
Okay I redesigned the main page, and will continue with the rest of the site once I get some opinions on how the main page’s color scheme looks now:confused:
