Basically, yes. AIM is one of many instant messaging programs. The primary use is for person-to-person instant messaging, but it can be used for chat as well.

I think you can, but it’s not a well thought out or well coded feature, IMHO. AIM is really good for one-on-one conversations, but with other stuff it sometimes falls a little short.
Slightly off-topic: If you are looking for a lot of chat rooms, you could check into getting connected to IRC (Internet Relay Chat), for hundreds of thousands of chat rooms.
