Just thought about this. It’d be interesting to see how our members vote on this one :p
October 9, 2007 at 2:41 am #164728DavidParticipantI see no need to shut it off when power is virtually free.
October 9, 2007 at 2:42 am #164727Jeff HesterKeymasterMy desktop runs 24/7. My primary laptop runs all day long, but I usually shut it down when traveling (though sometimes I just go into hibernation). My secondary laptop also generally runs 24/7.
October 9, 2007 at 4:59 am #164752AilindahParticipantAside from when the power goes out, I never completely shutdown. Seems I heard once it takes more power to power up a computer than to leave it running for a long period of time, dunno if its true or not, but have never seen any real advantage to shutting down every night.
October 9, 2007 at 10:54 am #164741PolarBearNPRParticipantI don’t shut it off unless I will be out of town for a bit. When it is shut off, it’s usually due to an upgrade, a power outage, or someone in the house randomly turning off electronics.
October 9, 2007 at 12:52 pm #164748Doris KenneyParticipantI also don’t see any real advantage to shutting down my machines. I leave them running most of the time. Sometimes, if I’m off to work and I know storms are coming, I may shut them down, or obviously when I need to do a reboot for some reason, but other than that? Why bother?
-Doris-October 9, 2007 at 2:30 pm #164743PhilipModeratorFor me, it’s probably force of habit that I turn my computer off when I’m going to bed. Unless I’m downloading stuff 😉 I’ll leave it on overnight.
October 9, 2007 at 5:49 pm #164749den44057MemberI also don’t shut down unless on vacation. my wife thinks it will hurt it by staying on 24/7 but I have never had any problems with it

Once a disk platter is spinning, there is virtually zero wear, drives fail when they spin up and down, not when they are spinning. Leaving the computer on is far better than powering up and down.

October 9, 2007 at 7:57 pm #164735sarahtownyMemberI tend to use my home computer just on a Monday and Wednesday night, so during that period it’s on sleep mode, because either I am or a family member is using it. Then I turn it off as I am busy the rest of the week.
To me weekends are for non computer stuff, I am out and about doing stuff like ….
Shopping, going for a beer, going for a beer, shopping then another beer then maybe another beer! lol
jk honestly, well maybe not :obut Thursday to Monday my computer tends to grow cobwebs 😎
Yes I know you’re goning say why am I here and it’s a Tuesday, that’s because my family which are all male are watching a boy film so I slipped out hehe
October 9, 2007 at 10:51 pm #164733TigerbladeParticipantI tend to turn it off at night just before I go to bed, or if I know I’m not going to be back anywhere near my computer for a long time (ie work, out of town for the day, etc). I know the “wear and tear” factor is practically nil if I’d just leave it on, but… meh. Habit.
October 9, 2007 at 11:05 pm #164734AwesomeSauceParticipantUsually I keep my desktop running 24/7. However, the cooling system in my PC is going to crap, and the fan in my power supply will randomly start hitting one of the cords, making a loud WHAPPING noise and making me nervous.
In this case, I usually just turn it off before I go to bed. I never know when the fan will become obstructed, get jammed, overheat the computer, and cause the whole thing to explode. 😉

Heh, Sarah…congratulations, you’re one of those normal people who have a life beyond their computers, not like us geekies who plonk ourselves in front of the blooming thing every morning :p Maybe the internet is supplying us with oxygen? 😀

October 10, 2007 at 7:36 am #164737sarahtownyMemberJust arrived at work and turned on my pc, having a lovely hot coffee, to get me ready for the long day ahead. Just in case your interested! hehe 😀
Anyway, I was just thinking about this poll, and wondered if you would have the same answer with your work computer (if you work with a computer that is).
My company policy is if you leave your desk for lunch or a long period of time, you put it on sleep mode. But when you leave the office we have to turn it off completely. Oh and if we have a fire drill, we also have to turn them off, (someone goes around the building to check if we have.) But I know if we had real fire, the last thing on my mind would be shutting down the pc!
Just interested if everyone has to do the same at work. I am assuming of course that you originally all answered this when thinking of your personal home computer, but I am sure you will correct me if I am wrong :p
