MemberI’m new to IM. I do NOT have any IM service yet. I’ve read good things about Trillian, and have installed it. It seems (although it’s not make truly obvious) that to actually use the Trillian client I must obtain service from one of the several supported providers (I’m thinking of using Yahoo’s IM service). First, is this correct? Second, is Yahoo’s IM service going to work decently (I won’t be a power user) with Trillian? Third, given that I already have an IM client app, do I need to download and install Yahoo’s IM client when obtaining their service? It appears that I must, but that I don’t need to use the Yahoo client, and could presumably un-install the Yahoo client.
I chose Trillian because I presume that once I get started with IM (mostly with my girlfriend, who I’ve convinced to install Trillian) I’ll soon be IM’ing with others, who may be using a service other than whatever I choose.
Thanks for helping a newbie get started!

MemberNo, you do not have to download the IM service providors applications. Simply go to their site and register and use that login information on Trillian. Which service do you have more friends and family on?

MemberThanks for replying! I just canceled a download of the Y client. I poked around Y’s site (I have a Y email address, as a second web-based account), hoping to do what you suggested, but didn’t see any option other than downloading the client. As for friends and family, I’m not sure (as a non-user, I haven’t paid much attention). I know some have AOL for email/ISP, so I assume they have AIM, too. But of the services, Yahoo sounds “cleanest” to me (based mainly on PCMag’s review, I must confess).

MemberIf they have AOL, you can only talk to them from the AOL client or AIM. (I think its possible through ICQ if I’m correct?) Ask around, friends, family, etc…
If you have a Yahoo email, then you should be able to login with that. If you are going to use Trillian, you might as well register and login to all of them and then add whoever from whatever you would like.

MemberI’m fairly web-savvy, and I’m a programmer, but I honestly cannot figure out how to add Messenger service to my existing Yahoo account! Do I *already have* Messenger service, automatically, as a result of obtaining a Yahoo email address?!? When I login to my Y account, I don’t see any info pertaining to Messenger.
If I start here http://login.yahoo.com/config/login?.src=pg&.done=http://messenger.yahoo.com/
and then login using my existing “Yahoo ID” and pswd, I’m taken to:
http://messenger.yahoo.com/, which seems to only provide links to download the client app.February 13, 2003 at 4:40 am #98069seanps999
MemberWell, I think I’ve got it figured out. In my IM client app (Trillian), I found that the place to enter my Yahoo account info isn’t in the area (an Explorer-style tree) where other “chat service” info is added. I found it elsewhere, under “Connections”. It seems that I do indeed already have Yahoo Messenger service, as a result of gettting my Yahoo email account a couple of years ago. So I *think* I’m good to go now. The proof will come once my girlfriend is up and running and we’re IM’ing each other via Trillian.

KeymasterYeah, you got it! Yahoo uses one screen name and password to login to all of their services (email, games, IM, etc.). You should be good to go once your Yahoo friends sign on.

MemberWell, to address the original question, I have had no problems with Trillian for Yahoo, MSN, or ICQ. I read somewhere that AIM used to make changes periodically just to make Trillian not work, but I got the impression that they “grew up” and stopped doing it. Use whatever service your friends do. I no longer even notice which service I’m using when I get a message because they all seem to work equally well on both the free and pay version. BTW, Trillian Pro is not worth the money. It doesn’t have any useful features that .74 does not have as far as I can tell.

MemberFreddie, Trillian PRO does have features that .74 does, read the website, try it out yourself. The next version, 1.1, will have much more features too, and in other updates.

MemberWell, I can’t comment on Trillian Pro, but I can now say that *I* had lots of trouble getting Trillian “basic” (free version) to work with Y: it failed to connect 90% of the time, despite trying all the tricks (using different Y server, re-setting my Y pswd, etc.). It also never showed my friend’s on/offline status correctly. I don’t have any of these problems with the Y client. To be fair, I should say that my friend has had no trouble with Trillian. YMMV, I guess!

MemberI have 1.0. Yes, it has other features, just not anything I find useful. For some reason I don’t want to get a plugin so I can play tic-tac-toe on Trillian…
February 22, 2003 at 6:53 am #98061magistyk
MemberThere are many other plug-ins that are useful, lets say you use a lot of chats, SPAM Challenger is great.
February 22, 2003 at 8:03 am #98065Freddie
MemberWell, the Pro version costs, what, $20-30? I got it just because I believe .74 is worth that much. If you are into skinning, it is useful, and I guess the Spam plugin mentioned above would be good if you receive spam over IM (I never have, despite making all of my messenger id’s public).

MemberSorry Freddie, we don’t like suggestions such as that here at BigBlueBall. Please use the Edit button next time, Thanks!

MemberQuote:quote:which service easiest, most reliable with T.?Actually… all of them.
If a ‘service’ is stable and reliable alone then it is stable and reliable via Trillian (both free and Pro), if however a ‘service’ is erratic and unstable alone (such as Yahoo) then it will remain so with Trillian.
Trillian cannot provide stability where none existed in the original application.
Trillian simply is the conduit that provides simultaneous interoperable connection to applications that do not themselves provide interoperability, if a service is normaly unreliable then it will remain so while using Trillian. -
