MemberI have added people to my contact list on one computer at home…when I then log into my Live Messenger account on another computer away from home those people are midding from my list.
To make matters worse I logged into ebuddy and had a couple of additions to my list there that do no show up on either of my Messenger lists.
I tried clearing the cache on my machine at home and then tried to log back into messenger…24 hours later it was still trying to log in. I replaced the cache and everything was fine.
Any thoughts?

MemberMicrosoft sent this reply: I did it and it resolved the issue.
There is a common issue among Windows Live Messenger users at present. The users may have had an incorrectly cached policy for contacts.msn.com that is why they are experiencing this issue. We are aware and actively investigating the issue and we apologize for the inconvenience this is causing.
The steps below contain information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, visit the following Web site to learn more about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry:
Description of the Microsoft Windows registry.WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly.
1. Click on Start and Run and type in REGEDIT and hit Enter
2. In the registry editor, click on “HKEY_CURRENT_USER”, followed by “Software”, followed by “Microsoft”, followed by “MSNMessenger”, and followed by “Policies”.
3. Select the “Policies” key and delete the folder.
4. Restart your machine.
5. Sign into Windows Live Messenger again.November 1, 2006 at 1:11 am #153965princeG

MemberWhen you get to the MSNMessenger folder…what are the subfolders in it?
You may see:
PerPassportSettings
PoliciesYou can either delete the POLICIES folder or delete the reference to contacts.msn.com
If no Policies folder exists I would then try clearing your Windows Live Cache. I would however suggest backing up the folders you are about to delete…
I. Change Windows Explorer settings
a. Right click on the “Start” button and choose “Explore” from the short-cut menu toopen the “Windows Explorer” window.
b. In the “Windows Explorer” window , click on the “Tools” menu followed by “Folder Options”. Click on the “View” tab. In the Advanced settings list, check “Show hidden files and folders” and uncheck the option “Hide extensions for known file types” under Hidden files and folders. Click on “OK” to close the “Folder Options” window.
c. In the “Windows Explorer” window, click on the “View” menu followed by “Explorer bar” and ensure that the “Folders” option is checked. This will ensure that you are able to see the folder list on the left side of the Windows Explorer window.
II. Try to delete the Contacts Cache folder to resolve the issue by following the steps below:
a. Right click on the “Start” button, choose “Explore” from the short-cut menu to open the “Windows Explorer” window.b. In the “Windows Explorer” window, goto the Folder list on the left pane and navigate to the folder C:Documents and Settings\Contacts where is the login name you use to sign into windows and is the address that you use to sign into Messenger
c. Delete all the files that are within the folder.
d. Right click on the “Start” button, choose “Explore” from the short-cut menuto open the “Windows Explorer” window.
e. In the “Windows Explorer” window, goto the Folder list on the left pane and navigate to the folder C:Documents and Settings\Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftWindows Live Contacts where is the login name you use to sign into windows and is the address that you use to sign into Messenger.
f. Delete the “real” and the “shadow” folders that are within the folder.
III. Try to sign into Messenger again.

MemberHi there Chris,
I’m having the same problem as you had, and i tried deleting those cache folders from WLM, but that method did not work for me…
I just tried to delete the registry key, but i still don’t know either if it worked or not..
Do you have any idea why deleting the folders didn’t work?
When i delete ’em and try to login into MSN, it just do not login.
I can only login again using webmessenger or other programas.November 11, 2006 at 5:44 am #153967chrismacwpg
MemberHi there,
The first thing I woudl do is tackle the Registry Key. If that policies folder exists then it will be the cause of your problems. After you delete the policies folder then reboot your machine and try logging into WLM.
If that does not work I would then tackle the contacts folders mentioned in the thread above.
You will not need to reboot after these folders have been removed.
If that still does not work you may want to re-install.
The problem I had was I deleted the cahced folders first and then tried to log in and I could not. It would sit and spin forever. Once I deleted the policy key in the registry it worked immediately.
This was cause by a corrupt policy.
Try thos teps again starting with the registry and then let me know how it goes.
