Scar
MemberGreetings BigBlueBallers.
I’ve posted this on another forum and didn’t seem to get any help at all so I’ll try to repost here so here’s a description of this weird error. Right after installing Windows Vista(x86 version) Service Pack 1 MSN just won’t run for me, everytime I try to run the program I get the crash error message “Windows Live Messenger needs to restart” and after the program closes it’s still found in the Task Manager and needs to be closed from there. I’ve tried uninstalling SP1 and reinstalling TWICE and everytime it’s out the program works fine. Here is the description of the error from “Problems Reports and Solutions”.
This is for the 8.5 current MSN version.

The last time I installed SP1 I decided to right click the Windows Live Messenger program icon, click properties and click the “Compatibility” tab, then tried running it “In compatible with Windows NT” and the program worked!, though if I tried XP or any other on the list it won’t work, Just NT and ones above it as the screenshots below explain.

Why won’t it work with that option being disabled the program running in compatibility with the Operating system I have running?
Here are screenshots of my system properties and welcome center’s computer description.

*EDIT* Also I would like to add that my brother has the same problem and both of us own similar computer models, Dell XPS 700 desktop PC. Both computers were purchased a few days before Vista was released and came with XP Media Center editions and bought a Vista Ultimate package as it was released and installed from there. Just clarifying that the computers didn’t come with Vista and the new OS was manually purchased and installed.
Here’s an image of the computer model: http://www.gameguru.in/images/dell-xps-700.jpg
Any help would be HIGHLY appreciated since I’ve been trying to solve this for a long time now. Thank you for your time.

ParticipantWhen you uninstalled and reinstalled, did you go clear out all remaining files, folders, and registry entries? I’d suggest a complete uninstall (try using Revo-Uninstaller[/url as it does a nice sweep for leftovers.
Then run a HJT log which you can grab on Filehippo and look for any remaning BHO’s or references to WLM including “msnmsgr”. (Be sure you’re browser is closed when you run HJT). Then reboot your machine.
Afterwards, run a good registry cleanup (perhaps with CCleaner. Of course it goes without saying (almost) that you should make sure you’ve scanned thoroughly for viruses and malware with up to date definitions.
Then try re-installing and let me know if it helps. If this doesn’t help you might need to look into the Windows Cleanup Utility but I suspect it’s just a result of something leftover and corrupted somewhere.

Hello there Patndoris and thanks for your reply.
I’ve just download and run all the programs you advised me to step by step and still the problem persists. MSN will only work when I run in compatibility with Windows NT or anything below that as the screenshot above explains. I have done a full system scan with KasperSky as well and already had CC cleaner installed long ago. I would highly doubt that this is a case of a corrupted file, though it may be, simply because my brother has the same computer and both of us having the same exact computer models/drivers..etc and that might be the issue, though that is it exactly I don’t really know and would hope to get some much needed answers. My brother runs his Vista on x64 and mine x86.
Thank you once again for your time and effort.

ModeratorHi Scar:
Try this (I don’t guarantee it’ll work, but give it a try). Quit all instances of Windows Live Messenger. Go to your C: drive, Program Files > Windows Live > Messenger. Locate the msnmsgr.exe file, right-click on it and click Run as administrator. See if that works.

Hello there Philip.
I’ve tried that a thousand times before and tried it again right now, doesn’t make a difference.July 11, 2008 at 3:22 pm #170506Philip
ModeratorScar,
Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to completely wipe WLM out of your system. After that, reboot, and download a fresh copy of WLM from here.

Hello there Philip, I have done that before and tried it again today, still doesn’t work. Can’t really understand what this issue is coming from and it has been a while already without any solution or explanation, can’t find anyone sharing the same problem online either.

ModeratorDo you have any 3rd-party add-ons installed for WLM? These can sometimes cause conflicts. In your case (reading your first post) it seems that Vista’s SP1 is causing the problem. But I had to ask.

ModeratorThis isn’t the optimum solution, but I’d suggest taking out Vista’s SP1 for the time-being. I’ll search the web for solutions and if I do find any, I’ll post them in this thread for you.

I really appreciate your help and will be searching as well, though I’ll have to admit I’ve searched quite a lot before and didn’t seem to find any that shared the same issue.

ModeratorYes, I’m sorry that problem had to happen to you. I have almost the same setup as you have; just reinstalled Vista Ultimate with SP1 last month (see my blog) and WLM never gave any problems, touch wood.

ParticipantWell, I’m not sure this will help but here’s a way you can supposedly get free tech support help for SP1 installation “issues” and if WLM functions before SP1 and not after and you’ve verified that, I think it qualifies as an “issue”. It might be worth a phone call or an email or live chat session.
Free Tech Support Related to SP1 for Vista ONLY
Here is the info posted on the MS Help and Support Site:
Quote:Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 1 (SP1). This support for SP1 is valid until March 18, 2009. Chat and e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.
Some issues may require more advanced support for which there is a charge.
For all other Windows Vista issues, visit the Help and Support site at http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?Gprid=11732, and then choose your product.

MemberMy friend also got the same problem running yahoo messenger in vista, although other friend of mine use Dell XPS and run well with msn messenger.
My suggestion is to download patches for vista :
Search it at google ; keyword vista patch
Or you can go to microsoft website
to get the msn that I think is compatible for vista.
Other harsh think you can do is to format your harddisk, then reinstall you vista. Although you already do a registry cleanup, there might be a slight of xp stuff left. Just one of them can crash your system, careful with that.
last question : When did you buy your vista ? Coz if you buy it when it was just being released, you should look for patches because the just released program usually have a lot of glitches.
