MemberHi,
I recently upgraded to the newest version of Windows Messenger (5.1). It appeared to install successfully, but
when I opened the application, it gives me this error:“C:Program FilesMessengermsmsgs.exe
This application has failed to start because the application configuration
is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.”The reason I want to use Windows Messenger is because Windows Live Messenger (and MSN Messenger) are way too bloated for me, so don’t post any “upgrade to Windows Live Messenger!!!” comments, because that’s not going to help me.
I tried reinstalling, repairing, rebooting but that didn’t solve the
problem. Are there any other ways that can fix this problem? Thanks in
advance. 😎January 1, 2007 at 6:44 pm #156358Byppn

MemberI read your post but I have to say it.
Have you tried using Windows Live Messenger? Did MSN Messenger 7.5 work? I realise you’ll think I’m an idiot, but it doesn’t hurt to answer these questions.
I’m not suggesting you update (well I am, but I’m not telling you you have to use Windows Live Messenger) but I do want you to update in order to check if it works, at least once.

Yes, WLM and MSN 7.5 do work.

MemberI see. When does the error occur? Please be as detailed as possible.

After I double-click the Windows Messenger shortcut icon. I don’t even get to see the main window of WM.

MemberWhen uninstalling Windows Messenger, what exactly do you do?
Do you just uninstall Windows Messenger through Add or Remove Programs?
If so, when doing so, there may be remnants of Windows Messenger still installed, since it’s..well..quite difficult to remove Windows Messenger.

MemberI went to Start -> Run, and typed this in:
msiexec /x “path to WM 5.1 installation MSI file”
This is for when I uninstalled and reinstalled WM 5.1, if that’s what you meant.

MemberThat will still leave remnants of Windows Messenger on your system. I’m trying to determine what is changed/added when you install Windows Messenger 5.1 but it’s hard..not being at home and all.
I don’t see what the difference between 98 and XP would do, Tkey.
Edit:
Have you tried installing an OLDER version of Windows Messenger? Like 4.7?

MemberI realise this is a double post, but I think you missed my edit, sss2k7.
My edit was:

MemberYes, 4.7 works fine. 🙂
I guess I’ll stick to 4.7 for now – until it’s required to upgrade to version 5.1 (if ever).

Sure. I don’t mind trying anything else. Hopefully you/we can find a solution for this. If all else fails, I’ll throw my computer out the window. 😛 (J/K)
