MemberI’m running under Win98 and soon will format my computer.
I was thinking about installing Windows XP but i’m just confused.
I’ve heard people praising and criticizing both editions so I cant choose on my own based on pure luck. I must admit that i’m having some trouble with windows98 but I dont know, maybe if I upgrade to winXP i’ll deal with it again? For instance when I start my computer both wupdater and wappic programms (dont know what they are really) are not responding so I had to shut them down completely. I’ve also heard that WinXp are just a show off with catchy add-ons and such but have bugs and I also noticed that some old programms wont run on XP. So i’m here asking you people, what system do you use, why do you prefer it (unless its Linux which is a no no to me) and what do you suggest to a common user?
Thanks for reading.May 29, 2004 at 9:17 pm #78910David
ParticipantI’d definitely recommend XP Professional (NOT XP Home Edition) to anyone that is running a 9X system. Yes, XP still has bugs, and just like every other OS, you will probably still have some problems. But 98 has a lot of issues that are fixed in XP, networking is a lot more complex under 9X for example.
There are some programs that will not run on XP because they are MS-DOS programs, and XP does not run over ODS like 98 did (Thus it is much more stable). However their are emulators out there that you can use so you will be able to use DOS programs on XP.
If your computer can handle XP, I’d go for the upgrade, But only if you have a 600Mhz+ Processor and 128MB+ of RAM, otherwise it will be a lot slower, and you might as well stick with 98, or buy a new computer

MemberI go with David. I have XP Professional and its advantages over previous operating systems are great. The interface, for a start, is alot more eye-catching and user friendly. Although, it does take a while to get used to navigating around Windows, however, once you’ve mastered this, it’s a quality operating system. Also, security on XP is easier to manage, and the NTFS file system works faster and allows you to privatise certain folders.
Oh, by the way David, these emulators that you mentioned, can you point me towards some of them please? Thanks.

ParticipantCheck this out: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/
When I say XP is a better OS, I mean that the OS is better, not the GUI, I could care less what the GUI looks like, I’m saying that the Core of the OS (WinNT) is much more robust and stable than 9X.

MemberOh yeah, I agree with you that the core of the OS is much better. I suppose when it comes to the GUI, its personal preferance. Thanks for the emulator anyway.

MemberDeadEye, if your computer is old and specs aren’t the minimum for XP, then I recommend Windows 2000 Professional. However, driver support is limited. But if your computer can handle it, go for XP Professional.

MemberMy computer is brand new. 512 MB RAM 2.8 MHz. One more reason i’m thinking about the upgrade is the MSN bugs on audio chat that seem to appear mostly on Win98 or ME. Thanks for the info on the DOS emulators David but I have no clue of what is a 9x system.
So does this make me a complete fool for using Win98 for the past year? lolMay 29, 2004 at 11:45 pm #78911MartinBradley
Member9x simply refers to Windows Ninety-Something, for example, 95 or 98. I think… And yes, your specifications there will support XP Pro.

ParticipantI’d highly recommend you upgrade to WinXP Pro, you can get it for only $140 at http://www.newegg.com . 🙂
Whatever you decide to do, please, please do not upgrade to ME.

MemberDave…the fine print states it must be purchased with hardware. Deadeye: It is up to you, you could always upgrade some hardware and then buy XP with that. Maybe a second harddrive? All I know is if you do purchase XP from newegg, you will need to buy a piece of hardware (it doesn’t say what). You will find this with really any reseller of MS OSes and products. For server products, you need an entire system…this is exactly why MS is a monopoly and Linux rules.

MemberActually I could find the XP edition in a much lower price. After all I have 110 GB, why would I need another harddrive? lol

MemberI use Mac OS X. It’s quite the shiznat. If I used an Intel/AMD machine, I’d get Linux.
