My computer suddenly shut down during a really bad storm last week. When we turned it back on – it gave prompts on how we’d like to restart the pc (safe mode, networking, restore mode, etc). When trying to start the pc in ANY of those options the computer just keeps shutting down. Now it will actually turn on but asks for the Windows XP Password. We never put a password for the system.
Suggestions??
Windows should never just prompt for a password…Did you try leaving the password field blank and just pressong OK? (That’s if you really never set a password) If that doesn’t work…can you tell me what’s in the “Username” field?
When you install or use Windows XP for the first time, I think you have to set an Administrator username and password. It might be this password which the computer is asking for.
But I dont understand why it is prompting him for a password after a lightning storm? Possibly it was from running it in a different mode of windows… sometimes safe mode and different modes can cause weird side effects.
Storms can cause strange things to happen to computers. Did you try what Spike suggested?
We actually had to reinstall the entire Windows XP System. Now we have to reload every program that existed on our pc.
We got some advice that during the storm even though the pc is protected via surge protector that you can get “zapped” thru a backup via phone line. Whatever the case – at least we can log onto the pc now.
