MemberIs anybody having this problem? Or is it just me? I’m going crazy if my WLM is not sorted out.. This started for me about 5 days ago.. I’m sure it’s not slowed down because of a program as i have not installed anything new lately.. I decided to buy a new modem as my current modem is 6+ yrs old. Paid SGD $100++ for a new modem and it’s still the same.. Anybody, Somebody, pls assist me out here..
Some Details you might want to know..
* Windows XP – SP2
* Windows Live Messenger Version 2008 (Build 8.5.1302.1018)Anyways, i don’t think it’s my broadband speed either.. I am totally lost..

Cheers and hope to get real help soon..

ParticipantCan’t give you any “help” per se, but I’m not having slow transfer times (slower than usual, anyway) so I don’t think it’s a WLM issue. When the IM geeks wake up, I’m sure they will give some opinions on what might help to speed the transfer.
In the meantime . . . hang tight! Help is on the way!

ParticipantHumph! IM Geeks eh?? ROLF!! Now to answer the question…I’ve noticed a couple of things not working as speedy as usual lately (and thinking about it – probably all in the last week.)
When I start a video call, sound will enable 30 seconds before the video connects and finally loads. Last night when I started a file transfer on a relatively small file, it took maybe twice as long to download as I would have expected. And finally, I noticed when I send a fille to someone it seems to take a little longer for the request to pop up on their end and vice versa.
I just upgraded to 8.5 this week, although I’m on Vista not XP, and originally thought it had more to do with that. However, in light of recent articles, it’s probably due to the traffic on the WLM servers more than anything else, and likely nothing to do with your machine. Obviously they are beta testing the next version, and since it was leaked, there are probably more people than usual accessing the servers. Since some of those people are likely to have problems connecting, or bug related issues, I’m sure it taxes their resources a little more than when things are running normally.
I presume you have a virus scanner running all the time and scanning on a regular basis? As always, when something starts to behave differently than usual, and nothing else has changed, at least 2 separate programs for spyware should be run for a thorough sweep of your machine. Spyware can do some very odd things. And finally since it all relates to the internet, it might not be a bad idea to run and take a look at a HiJack This log. You never what you might find that could be affecting your internet experience.
If you run through those suggestions and don’t find anything unusual, chalk it up to the WLM servers, and it will likely resolve itself shortly.

ParticipantSee? I told you one of ’em would come out and give an answer :p
We love the IM geeks and BBB has a ton of ’em. Without them, we’d all be running to the local taverns to drown our frustrations.

MemberThanks for ALL the replies and help m8s.. Well, i think i know why all these things are happening to me.. ( And when i say slow transfer, i mean 20-30 mins to transfer a 5MB file.. That is really really slow )..
Recently, i downloaded Messenger Discovery.. My file transfers went as per normal even after installing Messenger Discovery.. For those that have installed Messenger Discovery, you sure notice that everytime you sign in WLM, you will get a pop-up from MD itself. I am not a huge fan of pop-ups so, i installed a pop-up blocker specially for WLM.. The next day, i realized that my transfer speed was way slower than normally it would. Didn’t cross my mind that i installed the pop-up blocker. I had it uninstalled few mins ago and everything went well again..
Damn.. I just wasted $100+++ on a modem that i don’t need..
Edit : And yeah. I agree with you patndoris about files sent / received not appearing immediately. Sometimes when my friend send me stuff, they will nudge me and asking me to accept the files. But i see nothing. So now, we normally wait for a few minutes than the file will appear. That’s a pain in the behind.

ModeratorHi loanshark:
Thanks for sharing your observations about Messenger Directory with us; it might help out someone else in the future. Popup blockers sometimes cause more trouble than intended…usually it’s best to have just one (I use IE7’s built-in popup blocker and find that sufficient)
I see you’re from Singapore; not too far from where I am (Penang). Anyway, welcome to BBB, and stick around…plenty to do here.

ParticipantGlad you figured out the problem! Slow transfers are a real pain. Also try to avoid getting more than 2 going at any given time….that really slows me down!!
