I don’t know if I necessarily agree with the decision. I mean of course the husband is scum for beating on her, and he should be locked up or punished however. But should the dating service itself be held responsible?? It’s just a service that introduces 2 people, what happens after that is between those two people. Now every person has to be worried about setting someone up on a blind date for crying out loud.

ParticipantTalk about stupid people…. married 3 months after they met on an online dating service? She said the dating service told her she would be deported if she left the marriage… well, yes, if you are from another country and marry someone in the US, you have to stay married for a certain period of time to keep your citizenship. Otherwise anyone that wanted to get around the immigration laws would just pay someone to marry them to get in the country and then divorce immediately. So that had nothing to do with the service, it’s US law. Online dating services just provide places to meet… they can’t guarantee that all the people are nice people. Sounds to me like she just wanted a way into the states and a free ride. I can’t believe the courts sided with her.

MemberThats one of the stupidest things i’v ever heard.
It’s like suing an owner of a pub because you meat someone at the pub who turns out to beat you three months later.
Stupid.

Anyway, that is just ridiculous in my opinion. The dating service just helps people get together. The service should not be held responsible.

MemberI wanna MEAT[/b] someone. JK had to make fun of you for correcting his spelling. I didn’t know we had to be grat-a-mat-icly correct. Anyways bad English and spelling aside. I think that if you respond to a dating service and meet someone you have to be prepared to get to know them. If you want then get married to that person make sure that you know what your getting into. It strange that I know people who have no one in their lives for years and these people meet and get married in less than a year. Crazy World

MemberAnd speaking of frivolous lawsuits, let’s not forget about the old lady who sued McDonalds (and won) because she spilled hot coffee on her lap in a car after buying it at the drive-through. There is a whole website dedicated to that case and others just like it:

MemberHmmm I think that guy should be the one that gets brought to a trial. 2 Hour beating? Broken bones? Thats just screwed up. But I also think suing the company wasn’t fair. You could say that they need to do better background checks on the people, but you can’t tell if a guy is going to beat someone.

Most likely if she had sued the guy he would not have had the money she was seeking. It really is silly to jump into something without knowing what you are getting into in the first place. Marriage is hard enough the first year without being married to some one you hardly know that turns out to be a psyco guy who beats you. But that’s where I think it lands in her lap to have known the guy well enough before just marrying him. Oh well, we live in an imperfect world. If things like this didn’t happen we wouldn’t have a whole lot to talk about now would we?? 😀

Then actually is a law in America that allows people to do that. The point is so that companies/people learn from their mistakes by paying out massive amounts of money to victims. Forgot what the law is called though, i’ll check my english notes later.

MemberBeating up is quite excusable in some part of the world.Women keep quiet about it.i still feel the woman should sue that guy whether she gets citizenship or not.

MemberHell the only one responsible is that jerk that beats on her. Anyone who does thats deserves a good slapping.

Women keep quiet about it.Just because it is excusable does not make it right…but yes, there are too many places where beating up women is acceptable.
Quote:quote:Originally posted by strictdydyseeki still feel the woman should sue that guy whether she gets citizenship or not.
That all depends on her original reason for marrying him. If she was looking for a green card (which marrying a guy, who probably had signs of being an abuser kind of makes it seem like she was) she DOES NOT deserve to sue nor does she deserve to get her citizenship. People who lie and get married for a green card really have no conscience at all and make it harder for legitimate couples to be together, it’s wrong.

MemberActually if you read the article it says that she sues her husband also and won a settlement of $115,000
