MemberI recently had my computer serviced. They installed the Trend internet security software. Both the msn and yahoo messengers will not connect. I have tried allowing them through the firewalls, removing and reinstalling both teh security software and the messenger software but it does not work. is there any ideas that i’m missing?

ParticipantHello and welcome to BBB! Before I can try to assist I need a bit more information please:
What OS are you using? What versions of YH and WLM do you have? Do you have any other firewall or internet security software on the machine besides Windows Firewall and Trend?
WLM is generally very good at giving error codes when it fails to connect. Have you tried from the main login screen clicking on the troubleshoot connection issues? If so can you please give me the complete error code and description it returns?
I am concerned when you say you allowed then through the firewalls. You should only have (1) software firewall on your machine – or it will cause problems. If your Windows Firewall is on at the same time as your Trend, you should disable one or the other of them. Trend’s website says it shoud be preconfigured to work with the latest versions of both messengers.
I’ll be glad to try to help you but I will need a bit more information. Failure to connect can happen for a number of reasons. It shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out how to fix this, just be patient. In the meantime you can connect via the web to both messengers if you need to reach your contacts.

MemberI’m kind of having the same problem, my Yahoo will not connect…i’m running the Beta for Mac. I’m on a mac, running leopard. It’s really strange because I can log in under my email(yahoo) so I know my password and username hasn’t been messed with…and I can sign into Yahoo Messenger w/my other name…just not the one i’m trying to get into…it’s really weird.

ParticipantPlease take a look at this information from the WLM Messenger Support Space. This contains the “probable” cause and the solution for the error code mentioned.
After following these instructions, can you let me know if there was any improvement? I will tell you these suggested solutions are not always 100% on the mark, and WLM does return certain error codes not fixed by the suggestions, but it’s definitely worth trying.

KeymasterIt sounds to me that the Trend internet security software is blocking them and preventing them from connecting. I haven’t used this software, but most internet security software provides a way for you to configure and add programs to a list of applications that are “allowed” to connect to the Internet.
Check the Trend options and make sure both Yahoo and MSN Messenger are permitted to use the Internet.
Here is a link to their knowledge base describing how to allow third-party programs to connect to the internet: How can I set the Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 Personal Firewall to allow or block specific programs? [EN-1033135]

ParticipantOK – let’s try something a little different here. I’m going to focus on WLM for a moment. Can you please check the date and time on your computer to be sure they are correct. Also, if you are using a router, please make sure the date and time are correct on it as well.
Then check your default programs and make sure it’s set to allow access to both programs.
These should both be very quick to check and fix if necessary. Let me know if you find anything in either place that’s not set properly.

ParticipantHave you run the connection wizard in WLM ?
Choose repair to see if it fixes the connection issue.
Make sure your IE (Internet Explorer) is not set to “work offline”
That option is under “file” top left of IE
Most security suites tend to mess with windows firewall also so check the settings under windows firewall in control panel, it’s not bi-directional and if also on can cause issues. Make sure YIM and WLM are on the eceptions list if on.
Also if this doesn’t work, please post your versions of the mentioned software.

Memberi was able to check that the program defaults were set properly along with the time on the computer. but how do i check the time/date on the router?
March 19, 2008 at 2:14 pm #166970bdbarney
Memberi was able to synchronize the time and date but it was already the same anyway.

ParticipantOK. I’m assuming your router has a built in firewall (if it’s relatively new it probably does.) If you tell me the brand and model we can check to be sure. While a hardware and software firewall shouldn’t conflict, it can happen.
But let’s do this anyway. Disable your Trend Security Software, Turn OFF the Windows Firewall, and try to connect again.
If it does not connect please download and run a Belarc Advisor Report, save the file and PM it to me so I can see if there are any other security or firewall programs they may have installed or which may have originally been on the machine and were not totally uninstalled, which are causing conflicts. A Belarc will simply show your computer specs and installed programs, it won’t make any changes to your system so you can run it with no worries.
If it does connect, turn Trend back on and see if you can still connect. If not – you know it’s the Trend software.
If you can connect with Trend on, re-enable Windows firewall and try again. If you then can’t, you know it’s a firewall setting.
Be patient – we’ll get to the bottom of this in short order. I’ll be waiting to hear back. Good luck!!
