ParticipantI was actually hoping I’d find conflicting software to explain you’re inablility to connect. I suppose, I’m happy to say I don’t see any signs of any other software that would be an apparent problem. Since you tried with Trend Firewall off and still couldn’t connect, this could get a bit more complicated.
Have you ensured the Windows Firewall is OFF since you are running the Trend one? You can access this to confirm from the Control PanelWindows Firewall icon.
Did you try what Dermot suggested as far as letting WLM try to repair the connection? You can do this from the main sign in screen of WLM without signing in by choosing ToolsOptionConnection and then in the troubleshooter section click on Start. Can you please let me know if any errors show up and if so what it says?
I’m going to ponder this some more and I appreciate your patience as we work on it. I’m supposing YM gives you nothing but it can’t connect??

ModeratorI would hazard a guess and say that the Trend Internet Security software is the culprit. I’d uninstall it completely, reboot, and then check whether both Yahoo and WLM can connect. If they can, you’ve found the problem. If not, then Trend Internet Security is innocent.
Troubleshooting can be tedious at times, but when you find the solution (eventually), it makes it all worthwhile.

ParticipantOK let’s try something a little different. Can you please go to Control PanelAdministrative ToolsServices and tell me if the Windows Firewall shows Started? Also, does it show Automatic, Manual, or Disabled?
Don’t change anything yet – just tell me what it says. Even though mine was turned off by going to Windows Firewall on the Control Pael, it still showed started and automatic in services. So I’ve just gone to manual to be sure it’s not gonna cause problems, but if it is running anywhere it’s a possible conflict with Trend I would think.
Can I request a weigh in from the OS Guru’s here please??

MemberAre you using a router? If so, most of those have a built-in firewall. 🙂

ModeratorAs Doris mentioned in her post #10, perhaps you should check the time and date settings of your router. If you don’t know how to do that, please let us have the make and model number, and we’ll help you out.

it says “started” under status, and “automatic” under start up type.
i do not know how to check the router date and time. i found out how to synchronize it and that was the same as what was on the computer.

ParticipantI changed my Windows Firwall to stopped and Manual yesterday and have had no ill effects that I’m aware of. You might try this and see what happens. I’m inclined to believe Trend is somehow blocking the access as well, but that’s very difficult to say.
As mentioned we have the Windows Firewall, the Trend Firewall, and the firewall on your router to deal with. Generally a software and hardware firewall play ok with each other but it’s hard to tell sometimes.
Give the Windows Firewall thing a try by disabling it in the services and let me know.

ModeratorTo disable the Windows Firewall:
- Go to Start > Run. Type services.msc. Hit Enter.
- In the Services window that appears, scroll down until you get to Windows Firewall. Double-click on it.
- In the window that opens, ensure that you’re in the General tab. For the Startup type, choose Disabled. Also click on Stop, if the firewall service is running.
- Click OK and close the Services window.

ParticipantThank you Philip! For the hardware portion of this I think I’ll let you be in charge. 😉 And of course, if you’ve any other ideas which way to head please let me know. I’m hoping removing the firewalls one by one will let us find the root cause.

Moderatorbdbarney;228356 wrote:how do i find out the make and the model of the router?Well the make should be displayed somewhere on the router itself. The model number is usually on a sticker at the base. Turn the router upside down and have a look.
