MemberGreetings Friendly Folks of BigBlueBall Forums
I have been an avid Yahoo Instant Messenger user for many years and recently, after upgrading to the brand new Messenger 6 I have begun experiencing somewhat annoying problems, to say the least.
The situation is, I am online for extended periods at a time and at regular intervals YIM would just drop off without any prior notice, then instantly reconnect again. This is annoying considering sometimes I am in the middle of a conversation with an acquintance and then the drop off occurs.
A friend of mine has suggested that perhaps I have a virus that is causing this but I have a great product in AVG which I keep up to date at all times. It reports no virii on my system.
If anyone here has a suggestion as to what may be causing this problem or some way to address it, I would be very grateful.
I thank you kindly.

MemberWell, you be glad to know I don’t think it’s a virus.
What type of Internet connection do you have? And when you get disconnected, are you running any other programs which may use alot of your bandwidth?
For example, I get kicked off MSN Messenger when I am using Kazaa Lite, never happens when i’m not using K-Lite.

MemberI’m on ISDN 64k. I just use the usual programs, such as MSN Messenger, my browsers (IE, Opera & FireFox) and FTP software.
I don’t think it’s bandwidth problems as you suggest as sometimes it just happens when I’m not even active at the computer.
I know this as when I go to do something away from the pc, and I come back, it has disconnected and reconnected…
Thanks for taking the time to try and help martin_bradley2002, I appreciate your input.

MemberDo you have a router? My D-Link wireless router disconnects me on Yahoo an awful lot. Then signs me back on within the next minute or so.. It usually happens when my status is set to Away or Busy. I just opened ports 5000-5010 and it fixed it.

MemberIt seems to be fixed now.
For reference sake, this is what I did should anybody have a similiar problem in future:
1. Click on Messenger (top left menu)
2. Click on Preferences
3. Click on Connection (left hand side)
4. Select No network connection radio button (top right hand side)
5. Click Apply, OK, and you’re done.September 26, 2004 at 4:20 pm #71312arfarf
ParticipantYou actually need to click on “No network detection”, but it fixed me too. This setting must be stored on the Yahoo server, as it seems to have fixed my Trillian client too.
🙂
