MemberHi, I have e-mailed Yahoo approximately 3 times a week since August 11th about the following problem that I have encountered & they have offered me absolutely no help. I also know that about 7 of my messenger friends have written them about the exact same problem. Here is what I’ve sent them:
This is what happened:
1. I received a msg on yahoo! messenger from a good friend telling me to checkout his new pictures. Since he’s a good friend of mine I clicked on this
link:
2. When I did, it took me to Geocities where it asked me to login using
my yahoo id. I logged in & the page sent me to the Yahoo! privacy policy &
then immediately my messenger logged me out.
3. When I tried to log back into messenger it told me that my password
was invalid. I then tried to log into Yahoo! mail & it also told me my
password was invalid.
4. I went to reset my password using the information I provided when
signing up for my account & it told me it was invalid. My friends have all said said that theirs also did the same.
5. I went to my profile (http://profiles.yahoo.com/alexis_45) & now there is an embarassing picture of a girlI do not know urinating and pointing/laughing at the camera as my profile picture. It says my profile was updated Aug 2 (which is correct), but this picture was added sometime on the 11th.I have always had norton antivirus & it scans many times per week & there has been nothing found on my pc. I cannot access my account from any computer. The same thing has happened to one of my friends & his messenger forwarded the same link but told all of his friends that he was engaged.
Anyways, if someone could help i would GREATLY appreciate it.October 19, 2005 at 1:53 am #131965Nessa
ParticipantWow, well your account has been taken… You should NEVER click on any unknown links and you should NEVER log your id and password into sites that are not genuine Yahoo sites. It’s sad but people use geocities accounts to get people to log in using their password so they take your name. The only thing you can try is probably trying the “forgot password,” but they most likely have changed some account information. I wish there was more i could tell you, but it wasn’t a virus or anything, just that you shouldn’t haven’t entered your information. You should advise your friends the same thing. Also Never click unknown links, Never log your id and password to anything that isn’t a real yahoo website, and Never download any files you aren’t completely sure what they contain. Sorry i couldn’t help much.
Also, it would be better if you didn’t link the geocities site here, or else other people may fall into the same trap.

MemberHi MzAlexis, too bad but there is nothing much we can do about your account.
You can try contacting Yahoo! and provide informations that will verify your true identity. I bet that your zip code has been changed that makes your attempt to recover it through the “forget password” invalid. It really helps to provide an alternate e-mail.Uhmm to the moderators and Mz, could we just make the link inactive if not delete the link? Just for safety measures.

MemberYou have been victimized by the Spoof Yahoo Login Page Scam. Your friend’s ID that sent you the link also fell victim to the same scam. They go down the Friend’s List of all the ID’s they have stolen and get more victims. Consider yourself lucky, that the page after the spoofed login page didn’t contain malicious code that would have caused you a buffer overload and installed a trojan just before it crashes your computer, as I have seen happen to other victims of similiar scams.
Now to the issue of getting back your ID. Click on this link
It will ask you secret questions stuff when you signed up, make sure to put in the zip code you had used when you first signed up with that ID, it should reset your password.

MemberAs for using the “forgot password/user ID” page, it says that all of my information is invalid & I can’t even get to my secret question. I know that I’m typing in the correct stuff and this is the same thing that happened to my friends too, it tells them their information is incorrect. This really stinks! 🙂 Thanks for all of your help everyone, if you hear of anything else that could help let me know!

MemberWell alexis, you could do everyone else a favor, You could report that website to geocities/yahoo for having a trojan imbedded into the webpage. For that would shurly be a breach of the Tos ( terms of service) so if that webpage gets taken down by geocities, then people in the future might not get their account stolen.
But for you i would just notify all your friends about what happend, make a new yahoo id and add all your “friends” again. Im not shure there is anything you could do to get it back at this point.

MemberIf it’s any comfort/hope for you, MsAlexis, I got caught by exactly the same thing way back in early February 05 (I’m surprised it’s still around !?) – and I survived!
Like you, I was caught by the Geocities part – I knew that was “associated” with Yahoo, and was somewhat surprised it wanted my login details, but I gave them. Never again!
It took over a week of persistence with Yahoo Security, including having to fax them my passport image to prove who I was, but eventually they turned my account back over to me. 🙂
(Fair enough that they make it hard for you – it’s for protection of all of us)Important advice to everyone – apart from not GETTING into such a situation, do NOW go check your Yahoo account details – that your Primary email address there is still valid, and your date of birth etc are CORRECT, so if/when your account DOES get hijacked you’ll have a much better chance of convincing Yahoo that you are really who you say you are.

MemberI’ve sent them over 20 e-mails and & filled out that form at least 5 times & still only get an automated response. How the heck did you get them to help??? It makes me feel better that there’s a chance that I may get back into it. If you could let me know your method of communication I’d very much appreciate it!
Thank You!!!

MemberHi Mz.
I’m sorry I can’t remember exact details, but I think eventually I DID get some action via phone…. though I had to persevere through different numbers/operators, and be somewhat “firm” at times. 😉The best I ever got was a request to fax them my various specific details, but once that was done my account was eventually restored to me.
PERHAPS they aren’t as helpful any more ? ….
