is it possible to add new categories to yahoo profiles ?, eg “favourite movie” or “top ten excuses” etc

No, I don’t think you can add categorites to your yahoo profile.

I know you can add a link to these things, but I believe you have to write Yahoo and get permission from them to do what you want.

You cannot add new categories. You’re pretty much stuck with the options they show you. You can however post up to three links to anything you want and post that kind of information in the space they provide you. If you want to list long top ten lists, etc, my advice would be to create a page and post the link. Just update your page periodically with what you want.
