MemberEVERYTIME as of late, no matter what I’m doing, whether it be a lot, or just logged on and booted up messenger, it cuts out on me. It freezes up my computer sometimes to the point that I have to manually reboot because it locks me up totally. This problem has started like 2-3 weeks ago and just won’t leave. I had 7.5 but just tonight upgraded to version 8. I even tried using MSN Messenger and that too locks up on me. Is it the programs or is there something I might be doing myself? All I know is, it’s VERY frustrating and any help to solving this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot!

MemberHello Beane. Welcome to the BigBlueBall. 🙂
This sure sounds frustrating – I do hope someone here can help you. It’s good you’ve found the same with MSN, as that shows it’s not “just YM”, and equally it’s not just MSN. I’d suggest it MAY be your sound card, but more likely perhaps your modem or internet connection somehow.
I wonder if it might help if you try using voice while NOT online – i.e. try Sound Recorder (under Start, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment) and see if you have any problem recording , and playing back, there for a few minutes.
Assuming that works fine for you, then you’d need to investigate your internet connection.By the way, have you tried on any OTHER voice programs too (e.g. http://www.skype.com ) or not ?
(IF you like, add me to your YM, and I’d like to try a talk with you.)July 31, 2006 at 5:18 am #149097beane316
MemberI appreciate the help! Let me update you…I had installed Charter High-Speed Security Suite ever since I got my cable internet. I couldn’t uninstall it. Well, I had to talk to a charter rep. but he helped me uninstall the program successfully from my computer tonight. But I still have a big problem.
My Task Manager is messed up pretty bad. Whenever I bring it up, I don’t have a top or bottom to it, and that means I don’t even have the X to end it. To end the task manager I have to pretty much bring it up a bunch of times and then delete it as a group. I think this is effecting my headset screwing up so bad and freezing my computer when I use it. I think there’s some underlying problem because I used to be able to get on the headset with no problem and now no matter what program I use…it messes me up and I have to shut down my computer. I don’t know what else to do and I don’t want to do a system restore unless it’s 100% necessary. I know this is a forum for messengers, but I don’t know if this would have anything to do with my other problem. Do you have any ideas? Thanks a lot for the help I REALLY appreciate it.

MemberI don’t know if it will help but have you ran an anti-virus program to see if by chance you picked up a virus. or maybe ran a scan disk on your system. If by chance you picked up a worm virus it could be slowly eating away at some of your programs. but best of luck to you.

MemberYea, I sure did. I have my Norton 2006 and I ran that and it didn’t say I had a virus. This started a couple weeks ago and I dunno why it started. I appreciate the help and since I’m not all that great with computers…uh…how do you run a scan disk? lol thanks

Membergo to start click to open / scroll to programs / go to accessories/ then over to system tools / on the next dropdown list you should see scan disk in that list – click on it to open – a box will come up set it up to do a thorough scan and click the box that says automatically fix errors (should be a check mark in the box). you can run this while your on line but it is better to do this in safe mode. this is a very slow running program and may take a few hours to run but it does fix alot of errors.
if you need to know how to restart your computer in safe mode.
click start then shut down. in the box click restart after your system shuts down tap the F8 key until the page comes up to either start up in normal or safe mode in which case choose safe mode – after your done scan disk restart your computer will go back to normal mode by itself.July 31, 2006 at 6:12 am #149099beane316
MemberThanks a lot for the help, but when I look under system tools, I don’t see a scan disk. I see…
Backup
Character Map
Disk Cleanup (which I just ran)And a few other options but no scan disk. I’m running on Windows XP so maybe that’s the problem.

MemberHmmm, I don’t see it in there either, on MY XP.
Perhaps William can clarify ? (I’ve an inkling maybe ScanDisk with W98 may have been renamed to something else in XP, but not sure). But anyway Beane, it seems something(s) is very wrong on your PC, and I feel the underlying problem should be attacked rather than what are perhaps just EFFECTS of it, like maybe your YM disconnects, and your strange Task Manager window. (By the way, what screen resolution R U ? )
I’d suggest along with antivirus you also get/run a good anti-SPYWARE program (e.g. SpybotSD or AdAware, both free, and good) – and perhaps a registry cleaner such as CCleaner too.
(All 3 of those progs are easily got from filehippo.com )Then once those things have all helped ensure nothing obvious is lurking around, THEN start to attack remaining problems one-by-one.
As you say, this particular forum is meant just for YM discussion, but never feel nervous to post a question just because you’re unsure WHERE to post it. (The staff here can easily move posts or whole threads here if that seems warranted).

MemberWell, I’ve done everything you guys have suggested and I’m still having the problem. Someone told me that maybe I needed to update my audio driver. I don’t know how to do this. Could this fix the problem? I’m getting to the point where I’m ready to buy a new computer! lol

MemberI was re-reading you beginning post and you said that you got a charter rep. to help you uninstall something. Did he/she have you go into your registry and remove items. From what your saying it sounds like you have a file missing. I thought at first it could have been an error but I am taking that you did the scan disk for xp on all your drives and if that didn’t fix it then sounds like a file is missing.

MemberYea, what happened was I purchased a Norton Anti-Virus 2006 and forgot to uninstall my Charter High-Speed Security Suite. I then tried to uninstall my Charter and it didn’t work. I couldn’t go to Remove/Add or even click the link to uninstall it. I got a hold of Charter and they helped me go into a FTP file and uninstall Charter High-Speed Security Suite that way. Well, I reinstalled my Norton last night, and I’m still having the problem. I even tested out the headset last night during the time I didn’t have Norton installed. It’s still messed up and I’m running out of ideas and probably people with solutions lol

MemberWell, I just uninstalled my Yahoo Messenger, thinking perhaps it was a corrupted download. In doing so, I got a “ccApp isn’t responding” box, and when I clicked to end that, it went and restarted my computer automatically. I don’t know what this means…does anyone else?
July 31, 2006 at 11:13 pm #149090Eagle_Kiwi
MemberHey, I’d never heard of it, but… a quick internet search shows that ccApp IS indeed a part OF ….. Nortons (also known as Symantec) !
And THIS webpage shows what a lot of people think about it – mainly very negative!!!!
So rather than helping your system, it is possible that your Nortons could actually be the whole CAUSE of your problems!
I’d suggest perhaps exit Nortons completely – just temporarily – and check to see if you STILL have problems.
If not, then either take the matter up with Nortons, and/or throw it out permanently and get one of many good FREE antivirus programs (like e.g. AVG). -
