MemberHi,
I have a Logitech Pro 4000 on an XP OS, behind a netgear router on ADSL.
Using Yahoo Messenger both my webcam and that of a friend is running at very poor framerates. (roughly 0.77 frames/s)
On my friends side however, both images run smoothly which is very odd.Even when testing the webcam, starting it up to only view it myself, the framerate is horrendous.
On all occasions, it starts smoothly at a good speed for about 1 second, then the framerate drops and never recovers.I’ve been to the Yahoo webcam help page and started the test there, and it runs very smoothly there also.
Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be here please?
TIA.

MemberSounds to me like you just need to switch to superwebcam mode or whatever it’s called.
Mine does that too. When you start it up, the reason it runs so smoothly is because it’s not streaming to Yahoo!’s servers yet. Once it connects it slows down to what is set in the webcam settings. You need to just switch to superwebcam mode to keep the framerate as good (or close).
Just go to File/Preferences/Webcam and then click the “Start super webcam mode automatically” thing and go to save to have it go fast.

MemberThanks for the reply. 🙂
Sadly, Supercam mode is listed as unavailable on my cam link, and “off” on my friends.
The fact that both are seen smoothly the other end leads me to believe there is no problem with the upload, just the download from the server. If I try to link up two pcs behind my router and show the cam to the other PC, the supercam mode is available and allows it to run as smooth as you mention.
I have taken the router offline and gone directly through an adsl modem too, with a 2mb download speed, and the firewall is not blocking any incoming traffic from the webcam server.I have changed the pref. settings of the cam, the listed connection type/speed and prompt for supermode and this makes no difference at all. 🙁
Needless to say, I’m stumped.

ParticipantSuper webcam mode requires peer to peer connection and only one can see your webcam. When you link 2 pcs within the same subnet you have peer to peer connection but when you link with somebody on the wan side you need to config the router for peer to peer and the same for your buddy if he has a router.

MemberThanks for the reply Aneagle.
I don’t think thats really the problem though (unless I’ve misunderstood what you are saying and I therefore apologise), since I have removed my connection to the router and gone direct from a USB modem to the outside world.
I’ve even briefly knocked off my personal firewall to check if there is anything slowing an inbound connection. My friend is listed as having superwebcam mode “off” and mine unavailable.
Mine is the only PC that also gets very poor performance from both webcams, on their end, both are smooth as.

ParticipantAfter removing the router you can check and see if your Internet IP (fixed or dynamically asigned by the ISP) and your PC ip (check connection status) are the same and make sure port 5100 is open, if you don’t find the same ip it means your adsl modem has router function. Most of ADSL modems have built-in router function and you can’t have p2p without some tweak.
