Jeff Hester
February 1, 2002
In a recent editorial titled “Why AOL is right to turn away a million Trillans,” ZDNet editor David Coursey performs one of the dirtiest, blatant displays of brown-nosing IŒve ever seen!
Coursey unquestionably accepts AOLŒs assertion that Trillian is a “hack” and a “security breach.” He makes the point that AOL owns and maintains their IM network, presumably at a considerable expense, and that by using Trillian, AOL misses out on potential advertising revenue. Basically, it all comes down to money.
What he neglects to point out is that AOL is a big net advertiser with deep pockets. Trillian is not. CourseyŒs view is tainted by the very thing that AOL whines of losing to Trillian: money (in his case, AOL advertising money).
Funny how he laments the current state of the IM world, where he is “forced” to run three different IM clients. He whines about how slowly AOL is moving towards interoperability standards. And yet, were it not for plucky upstarts like Trillian, AOL would be moving even slower!
I will not argue the legalities of the situation. But I support Trillian because their existence provides the pressure that just might lead to the IM interoperability we all would like
Should AOL block Trillian users? What do you think? [Share your opinion]
