MemberHey Jeff :o)
Did you want to move my post or should I? and I wasn’t saying Jabber wasn’t working… Just in case you thought I was… I don’t run it so I have no idea…Lana
MemberWas hoping that additional info would follow this article but since it hasn’t I thought I’d share what little was said on the issue. The jabber Inc. shut out is interesting, if nothing else

MemberI haven’t seen any indications anywhere that there is any sort of widespread inability to connect to MSN via any of the third party clients… There is nothing from either side, just as Jeff said. The only thing that I did make a note of when searching is that it has been said a few times that MS likely wouldn’t have any licensing documentation ready in time for the October 15th deadline so perhaps they will extend that date to the point at which they do? Or maybe they’ve had a change of “heart”? Either way, I hate being in the dark but at least everything still works for now…
Lana
MemberYes, so far so good… Here’s hoping it holds past the bewitching hour, as it is sometimes called… didn’t yahoo connectivity take a dive after the deadline that they had set had past?
Lana
MemberToday’s the day… We shoud find out something about the whole license issue…

I don’t think that they want to put an end to Trillian and like third party clients but they are no longer willing to give a free ride… What amazes me is the “stick your head in the sand” attitude that prevails. Consider the latest statement made by a mod over on the Trillian forum regarding the looming Oct 15th deadline set by MSN:
“This issue has already been discussed at length.http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/foru…&threadid=42884
Cerulean Studios has updated its clients to the new MSN protocol, so there should be no problem.
Denny D. Daugherty”He linked to a locked thread so no discussion is permitted there and new threads are locked…
What he failed to mention was that Yahoo also gave a deadline, September 24th… CS’s official statement was, Cerulean Studios has updated its clients to the new Yahoo protocol, so there should be no problem.
And we all know how that went… Furthermore, Yahoo isn’t requiring third party licences, MSN is… Now I don’t personally know if there will be a problem with MSN connections after Oct 15th, 2003 but I would be very surprised if there are none. At least my eyes are open… Hopefully CS has signed a deal with MSN and there won’t be a repeat of the Yahoo issue… Course there’s nothing stopping Yahoo from twisting again either so who knows…
By not allowing discussion of the issue it’s like the mod is saying just ignore it, it’ll go away… Hopefully that will not be the fate of the software as a result… There are lots of people willing to stand behind Trillian but those who would do so with open eyes are not willing to stick their heads in the sand…
Lana
MemberRight you are, Alex…
The developers of Trillian have no control over the funtionality or connectivity of their product and therefore can not guaruntee any. This is a given… But what good are the extra features that you pay for if the products main function, to connect to multiple clients at once, doesn’t work?Whatever: Yes, there are some very extreme people over there… but it’s like anything else in life… You have to take the bad with the good… It’s just harder to ignore when “the bad” has a loud backup band, lol. Rest assured “the good” is there, as it is everywhere… It’s often found behind the noise of “the bad” whose function is often to drown out the voice of reason if it goes against what “they” think is “the way”. Then there are those that see the problem but who don’t think they have the strength to speak up over the volume of the “backup band”… 🙂
Lana
MemberYeah, I thought Rusty’s post was a little rabid… There is constructive criticism and logical questioning and then there is blatant animosity. When mixed, one tends to overpower the other and diminish any merit it might have otherwise had…
OT: James Taylor is one of my all time favorite artists! Think I’ll turn some on too… Thanks for the idea, Jeff

The beta patch is only available to paying customers… If you have purchased Trillian Pro 2.0 you can get the beta patch by logging in… Otherwise you are out of luck… Unless you want to use GAIM. The Trillian developers have shared the “fix” with them and they have made it available to their free user base…

MemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by JeffAnd will Miranda still support MSN Messenger after October 15th? Trillian will.
Quote:quote:Originally posted by carbonizeMiranda’s MSN protocol is always being updated so I’ll say yes to that one. But it’s Yahoo hasn’t been updated in a year and is now dead.
Miranda may be the first to reach an agreement with microsoft!? Unless, of course Trillian beat them to it? Could you direct me to the statement made by the developers of Miranda and or Trillian announcing that they have signed a licensing agreement with MS, please… This is really big news! 🙂
Lana
MemberI hope it’s in a good way…, lol

I don’t find it odd at all. I think its done in the spirit of cooperation, recognizing that the IM market is big enough for many clients. As for why they haven’t supplied a patch for their free version? I can’t say, other than I understand that every company or organization needs to allocate their resources as they see best. But I’m just speculating.Frankly, as a paying Trillian Pro user, I’d be pretty upset if they didn’t focus on 2.0 first! 🙂
I wholeheartedly agree with you, Jeff. I think the sharing of info with Gaim is a giving gesture on the part of Cerulean Studios. What I found odd was that they would release it to the non paying users of Gaim and not to the non paying users of Trillian Basic… (or to the competetion before its own loyal users). The beta patch for paying customers who choose to use Pro 2.0 (I say who choose to use it because many have stated that they are disatisfied and have chosen to stick with Pro 1.0) is also recognized as a smart move on their part for the reason that you mention, however it does not help those who find Pro 2.0 too “buggy” to be considered useful and who have opted to revert back to Pro 1.0 which they purchased under the agreement that patches would be free for life and that they could continue to use it as long as they like… I am still curious though, of your thoughts, and others thoughts, on how the circumvention of Yahoo’s protocol would be different from the circumvention of CS’s protocol? Please note: This is a serious inquiry and only serious responses are solicited. Flames will only serve to mark the posters’ inability to comprehend both sides of the equation. To be open minded and to look at both sides is not to choose sides but to choose knowledge…

MemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by restless311I downloaded the patch off Kazaa. Look for [snip – the admin missed this one ~ Jim]. Works great.
You could always try using a legal version… And if you don’t want to pay you could always use Gaim as Cerulean Studios has shared their knowledge on how to circumvent the Yahoo authentication with the developers of Gaim so that they may distribute it to their users. Oddly enough Cerulean Studios did so before supplying their own users of their free software with a “fix”. I can’t quite figure out the logic in that but hey, it’s not my call. Say, isn’t Cerulean Studios’ circumvention of Yahoo’s authentification eerily like those who circumvent Cerulean Studios’ authenification? Hmmmmm…

It is a rather strange dichotomy isn’t it… However, thankfully it is a small, although very verbal, minority that fails to recognize it…

MemberQuote:quote:Originally posted by JeffI’m still waiting for Lana to say “I told you so” about the Yahoo connectivity problems. 😉
When treated with respect I try to make it a habit to return it… So there’s no “told you so” coming your way, Jeff… 🙂
As for those who flamed me well… I bet they feel real special right now ;), lol…
My only comment thus far on the situation is to wonder what MSN has in store for 3rd party clients and to wonder what they (Yahoo) changed in order to create the inability to connect…
