MICROSOFT has issued an urgent security alert about its Windows operating system, warning that all users were vulnerable to an attack that could give a hacker complete access to their computer networks.
Once inside, according to Microsoft’s security bulletin, an attacker could wreak havoc by taking “any action on the system”, including installing programs, viewing, changing or deleting data held on the computer, or creating new accounts.
That means a virus or hacker intrusion could do anything from wiping out a hard drive to rummaging through bank account details.
The computer giant has tagged the security alert as “critical” – its most severe security rating – and has posted patches on its website that plug the security breach.
US-based Microsoft security executive Stephen Toulouse described the flawed software as “an extremely deep and pervasive technology in Windows”, and urged customers to apply the patch immediately.
