Okay I have a problem with my aol, whenever I try 2 send an IM it goes really slow but the computer itself isnt slow and nothing else is slow except when I send an instant messenger…the only way I can get it 2 go fast is by direct connecting but I would really like to get this fixed. I’ve tried unistalling it then reinstalling it,shuting down my computer for long periods of time, cleaning my computer off and I got the most updated version of AOL. Please help.

I’m sorry dude, but please stop saying that AIM is slow because of routers. In general a router would never do this, a router is just another of many hops to the internet, it only can slow things down a fraction of a second. Maybe a defective router was your problem, but many, many people have this problem, and many of them do not even have routers.
May 15, 2004 at 3:43 am #45150Chase7863MemberI have this problem too. For about 5 seconds every time I send a message the messag window freezes before it goes through. I even tried trillian and I have the same problem. Nobody anywhere seems to have a solution, and don’t try reporting it to the aim people at aim.com, they don’t respond.
May 15, 2004 at 5:02 am #45139alana0601Participantdavid, im simply letting people know that my defective router was the cause of my aim signing me on and off every 5-10 minutes. people want to know why there aim is slow so im just giving them a possible reason..jeez.

It was stated as a fact, rather than as a personal experience.

May 16, 2004 at 11:39 pm #45134CharlesMemberYeah, or we could solve this once and for all. Instead of blaming routers, why don’t we find a reason for this? First off, Jorgey, does getting the “info” of someone take a while? If so, your connection is likely being used by another program to download or upload material. I suggest closing Kazaa if this is the case.
Otherwise, you could try switching the server that AIM connects to a different one. I am not at home right now but will find the list of servers. It is somewhere around here on these forums. There are about 8 or so…reply withany more information you can give us. (connection speed, CPU specs)
May 17, 2004 at 2:43 am #45146Jorgey007MemberOkay my internet is a cable and its speed is 2.8 megabits per second…and I have tried closing Kazaa…i actually uninstalled it from my computer but it didnt help. I have barely any programs on my computer and I have ran AOL instant messenger with nothing else running and it still seems to take several seconds to send an IM. Sometimes it does freeze and crash aol but very rarely…only if I try to do something else while the message is sending. This becomes very annoying because it takes several seconds to send and I can’t do anything till it sends. If I direct connect then it will send messages to people faster but sometimes I can’t connect to some of my friends because their firewalls etc. and when I view peoples profiles it loads very fast and so does the rest of my internet etc. And how would I change servers if that is the reason for IM sending slow? So if anybody could please help me that would be great!! And im not that all great with computer stats. etc. just so you guys know because I dont know a lot of this computer talk.
May 17, 2004 at 12:38 pm #45133CharlesMemberOkay, are buddies signing on being delayed? Are the sounds being delayed when people sign on? Does the client become unresponsive after a while?
I had this problem when using AIM 5.5 where after leaving it running for a while it would slow down and the sounds would become messed up. I am not sure whether that is the case; do you use other messengers? If so, do they run slow?
Also, how much RAM do you have in your computer?
And…do you run ad-aware? If not, http://www.download.com do a search for ad-aware, download that and run it.
May 18, 2004 at 12:32 am #45145Jorgey007MemberYes I do run ad-ware and I havent ran any other messengers should I to see if they run slow? how would I find out how much RAM I have on my computer? I restart my computer and the open aol right away without anything else running and it still goes slow. ahh im pulling my hair out over this one!
May 19, 2004 at 6:07 am #45142XxCRASHxXMemberj/w what version aim you have and if so are you using any add ons to it , if your using the newer aim maybe an older version will work best for you?http://www.oldversion.com or something along thoes lines.. just a thought not promiseing anything
May 19, 2004 at 9:55 am #45151rowtyMemberAIM/AOL has implemented some constraints on incoming or outgoing instant messages. I tryed talking to AOL/AIM about it but they have no comment regarding it. I believe it is in-out ratio. Further speaking if you have too many incoming messages and not enough outgoing messages = the correct mediocore then AIM/AOL blocks the ability for someone to see your text, it will just show that you are “typing” but your message will not send. They have taken it so far that they will officially gag a name for a certain period of time if the in-out ratio is not equal. If anyone has seen this problem or is dealing with it in talking with multiple people, tell me more about it. I am in the process of trying different things to get around it but I can’t seem to figure it out. Post here if you have any ideas.
May 19, 2004 at 2:28 pm #45152accordracin03ParticipantI am having the same problem. It’s pissing me off. There is no point of using it if it takes a couple of seconds to send a message. It’s like it is lagging or frozen. When you try to send a message you can not even use AIM. It will just stay there and not move for like 3-5 seconds…. Dang it… please HELP!
May 19, 2004 at 8:35 pm #45144Jorgey007Memberwell my friend told me the other day that theres a virus going around that spreads through aol? is this true?
