Ah, so you go for the Fisher-Price look, heh.
I completely disagree with that juvenile comment on every level. The fact of the matter is that XP has an extremely intuitive interface, the learning curve is no worse than any other OS, and the “Luna Blue” theme is easy on the eyes, most people don’t want their computer to look “pretty,” they want something that works properly and cleanly. The usability issues wouldn’t be things you would notice, since you’re an advanced user and do things differently, and want it to look different, since instead of searching for a setting, you already know where it is.
Or you could jump on the “hate windows” bandwagon.

Where’s the option for “No, because I just don’t want to”? As for now, I see no appeal in Vista. But, Vista really doesn’t look that much better. At all. Fortunately, in XP, you could simply change the theme to classic Windows style (I don’t know what the theme options for Vista are). I’ll admit, there are some visual aspects of Vista that look pretty cool, but overall it’s pretty much just as ugly as XP…
OK, there’s an option for “No, because I don’t want to.” I try my best to please 🙂 And yes, you can change the theme to classic Windows style in Vista.

If it doesn’t work, I don’t care how pretty it is. I need something that’s gonna handle what I need now, what I want now, and what I may try in the future. And my experience with Vista . . . while certainly cool-looking . . . couldn’t handle me. And yeah, maybe I ask alot . . . but do I really?
August 20, 2007 at 8:10 pm #163501Doris KenneyParticipantDavid – I have a Samsung Blackjack & Vista. I had to re-download the Windows Mobile Device Center to get it to work. I don’t have to switch to modem (at least not consciously I don’t LOL) I just enable the internet sharing from the Windows folder on the phone – but I do have to futz around with active sync several times to get it to stay off. That seems to be more of a phone thing tho as I have the same issue on XP as well.
I’m fortunate to have a laptop with XP and also one with Vista. I’m learning to like Vista more than I did at first…but for IM (YH voice chat specifically since it doesn’t work on Vista) I have no choice but to default back to XP.
I also find the re-naming of things such as Add/Remove Programs to “Program Management” very frustrating and am sure some person in a cubicle at Microsoft gets a chuckle every time a Vista user can’t find something simple. Most annoying recently is the discovery the auto defrag ignores fragments of a certain size, thus when I do an online “tune-up” it tells me I need to defrag. Wouldn’t be a problem in XP…but with Vista you have to go all the way down to the C: prompt to do a manual scan and I just can’t be bothered with it. Doesn’t show defrag progress either – what a pain!!
As a Vista user…don’t run out and upgrade. If you get a new machine and it comes with it fine…but don’t leave the relative safety of XP just yet.

Yeah, with WMDC 6.1 it’s actually okay, since its detected by older program installers as ActiveSync, and works as such for application installs. As for the modem/inet sharing… I did get it working on the laptop before I killed off XP, but I can’t get it detected at all on my desktop (still vista). I don’t blame MS so much for this driver issue though, since I’m not sure where that drive is, if its on WU or what.

Once you’re used to it, it won’t be a big deal… just as Add/Remove programs wasn’t. You can also make use of the control panel search in vista, “add program” brings up all the options from before.

Agreed. XP sucked on the year 2000 hardware, and Vista sucks on the year 2006 hardware, if you don’t have a new system, or a very (very) high end system, it’s not likely worth your time.
October 8, 2007 at 5:28 pm #163502AilindahParticipantI am not doing the Vista upgrade either. Its not really worth it to me. Have seen demo machines in various store and I am just not overly impressed with it enough to justify throwing down $200 to upgrade. I like my Windows XP a lot and really see no reason to justify a change at this time. I know eventually I will have to, but for now I will be hanging on by my fingernails to my XP. As a side not, I am one of those users that doesn’t really care about “pretty” my XP is set up with the classic windows look, down to the taskbar, start menu and windows. Never really cared much for the Windows TeleTubby look
