Sounds like https isn’t correctly associated with IE. I’ve had similar problems switching default browsers. Try resetting the IE settings. Under Programs in your IE settings, click Reset Web Settings and also check the ‘make IE default’ box. Then close all instances of IE and open it to let it reset its associations.
You could just create a shortcut to “http://gmail.google.com/” in which case it’ll redirect itself to the right page.
