Most likely he disconnects from the Internet before he disconnects from AIM. That way AIM stills thinks he is online, until there has been no sign of life from the user for a good five minutes. Then AIM disconnects him.
He should first disconnect from AIM, and then from the Internet if he wants this to stop happening.
