The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says it is close to making available a laptop for developing markets that would cost around $100 USD. At a minimum the computer would feature a color screen, Wi-Fi, a 500MHz processor, and 1GB of flash memory.
The unit would even be able to generate power on it own through the use of a hand crank, making it useful…See the whole story here

Even if it doesn’t have a CD drive, I hope it has at least two USB ports so I could connect my 120GB External HD if I needed more storage. Anyway, it’s a great idea. For developing markets? what does that mean? I want to get one as soon as they become available in stores… if they do.

Mainly featuring and focusing these countries that’s why it’s price is kept so low.

Linux 🙂 it would also be great to have linux, to experimnent with it.September 30, 2005 at 11:17 pm #130998TigerbladeParticipantyou people obviously havent read any more about this thing. they dont plan to sell it privately… ever. they want to make it so pervasive in school settings that no one will own one outside of a school environment. if you steal one or try to get one without being a student, it’s like stealing a mail truck – everyone will know exactly where you got it from.

1) I’m a student.
2) Belongs to an under-devolped country. (Don’t know still now Pakistan on the list to purchase or not!)
3) There are chances man… that I might get my hands over it. 🙂
Edit
Here is an other interesting article on CNet blogs.
A $100 laptop might not be for everyoneOctober 1, 2005 at 12:29 am #131003NessaParticipantAqeel wrote:They all are for educational purpose, for ”students” in devolping countries.

Most schools WILL indeed do this, my university as part of first time enrollment as a freshman, you are given a laptop from dell. Each year they upgrade, and you get to exchange it every two years for a newer one if you wish to do so. I received the Dell Latitude D610 and the campus has wireless everywhere you are on it, just log on with your student id and password. It’s a good deal, but they just toss it in tution without many people knowing.October 1, 2005 at 6:34 am #130997EEDOKMemberThese won’t be available for the general public.
