March 9, 2005 at 10:34 pm #116070neo_ny_23MemberYeah, I read about them earlier. Sun is coming up with a new operating system with many revolutionary cool ideas. Its named as Project – Looking Glass, and you all can check the screen shots here in this website.
March 9, 2005 at 11:00 pm #116067AwesomeSauceParticipantThis sort of reminds me of Spaces. Maybe not quite as cool as what Neo mentioned, but pretty fun.
March 9, 2005 at 11:36 pm #116062Jeff HesterKeymasterWhoa that’s a nice idea and I like the way it looks but I wonder how user friendly it would be and how many system resources it would take. Either way I’d be willing to give that a try whenever and if it is released.
March 10, 2005 at 1:42 am #116071neo_ny_23MemberWow, I love spaces.
March 10, 2005 at 2:34 am #116064Someguy03MemberDoesn’t look that great. I could care less if my operating system can render *windows* at different angles. Why would you possibly need it? It wouldn’t be cool unless you were rendering actual 3D objects and moving around to view them from different angles.
March 10, 2005 at 2:42 am #116063Jeff HesterKeymasterYou do make a good point, besides looks, which are pretty neat but not all that, I wouldn’t see the practicality of such an OS.
March 10, 2005 at 2:45 am #116073FirefoxManMemberThat picture just looks bad. No 3D desktop environment had better look like that, because that IS NOT COOL. But Sun’s project “Looking Glass” is pretty cool looking… I’d personally like them to clean up the GUI (make it smoother looking, as of now, it’s kinda rough and pixelated to meh). But yeah, that picture is just plain ugly.
March 10, 2005 at 4:15 am #116068colinMemberI would never use it if it looks like that, it looks terrible. I see no point, I am just as happy clicking on icons that are “2-d”.
March 10, 2005 at 5:35 am #116066TigerbladeParticipanticons? what icons?? i go for the minimalist look… as little as possible. i have ONE icon on my desktop – the recycle bin. that’s it. i think i’d go insane if my desktop looked like that crazy 3d stuff.
utterly pointless.

Hehe, kinda same here. I just have the recycle bin and my main folder with all the course stuff in it for easy access. The Project Sun does look amazing, but as it was discussed here before, will the normal CPU handle the resources? My laptop gets as frozen as ice every time I run more than 6 or 7 programs at one time, but I guess, those 3-D environments will require huuuge resources, which my poor laptop wont possibly afford.

Project Looking Glass isn’t an operating system, it’s just a window manager for linux.
here’s a picture of me using it: http://uploader.ws/upload/32005/file3.1110439448.1.pngQuote:Doesn’t look that great. It’s also really handy when you want to zoom in on a window or tack a note to the back of it.

That’s the big problem with looking glass, is that sun in it’s shameless self promotion got it written in java, so in addition of the overhead of being 3D, it has the memory overhead of java as well. After 3 or so windows are open, that’s when my ram normally is maxed out while using it. It’s still got a long way to go(as I highly doubt the normal user would want to use a 3D command line for everything) so by the time it gets released, the normal computer should be able to handle it no problem.
If you want to see it in action just watch the demo.

Heh, I have two icons, but usually only one…the recycle bin, of course! That is what quick launch is for.
