This month marks the 8th anniversary of BigBlueBall, and I don’t want to let the occasion go unnoticed.
Anyone have any ideas for an 8 year promotion? Contest? Game? Giveaway?
On a separate note… any fun ideas for an April Fool’s gag? 🙂
I read it, but I don’t have any bright ideas 🙁 The only thing to do with 8 I could think of is a Magic 8 Ball and I’m pretty sure no one wants to win one of those.
I don’t really know about contests – how bout who gets the most friends or starts a group and gets the most followers? It would encourage people to reach out to other members…..And staff should be excluded from it – we need to encourage the visitors more in participation.
That’s bout all I can think of.
I think it would be neat to have one large prize, and a series of smaller ones (perhaps an iTouch & a bunch of gift certificates to iTunes [for music, movies & applications]). For the actual contest? My local radio station is actually having a contest where people write (in 125 words or less) why they “need a life”. Obviously you can use your imagination about what people wrote in about.. but if we could do something similar, along the lines of write (in so many words) what IM means to them, or how it changed their life, or how much it’s become a staple in every day lives, where it was a need to have thing 8 years ago — and now it’s every where.
Just an idea.

Hmm…Det’s idea sounds really interesting. Like, they post it in a thread and we all vote for the best one. “Win a free BBB T Shirt and [Some other cool thing]! Write in what IM means to you and see if your post wins in the “X” post in “Y” forum!”
The Magic 8 Ball idea is interesting…maybe we could personalize it?

Another Idea is that people can have a chance at winning 8 prizes when we choose 8 winners from the essay contest.

But I am very appreciative of the work and time that Jeff, and everyone as an individual has put into this website and community.
The iTunes thing was tried last time but it was unredeemable by people who were outside of the U.S. – I think. As I remember, someone over-seas had trouble with this.
As far as the April Fool’s thing – the only idea I have was the one I stated on IRC.
-Sending a mass e-mail to everyone at BBB stating they have won a prize and just need to log in to the site to claim their prize (include a link in e-mail) which leads to the site and has something stating April Fool’s Day – or something along those lines.
It’d get forum activitiy up that day – and it’d get people to stop by who haven’t stopped by in forever and get them to see the new forum changes.
Now granted some people like someone who got upset recently at the forum (I won’t name names) will probably get upset and state how low we have sunk to get forum activity but hey in the end it’s slightly funny? Plus I’m a mean person and would love to have typed GET OVER IT to that person – it’s not like they’ve been very active on the forums to begin with – but I’ll be good. 🙂
On that note though – I know this should go on a different thread but – instead of a member having to post per day to be able to play – how about one post per week/month? It’d keep the spam/useless post down plus it’d weed out people who just log on or sign up to play. If possible.

It’s hard to come up with something creative with an eight (aside the 8-ball thing). This other site had a nifty 8 year idea but theirs was related to art which is what their site is about so it worked.
A contest is always good. I actually think a game would work best – I have been thinking about it but haven’t come up with anything – sorry. 🙁
I like detn8r’s idea but obviously it’s going to be a problem sending prizes to overseas members. Perhaps a cash prize credited to the member’s Paypal account? (if they don’t have an account this would be a good excuse to open one!)
Or would Amazon gift vouchers work for us who are overseas? Sorry I don’t have all the answers here 😮

I’ve had a week of highs and lows. Monday was my 47th birthday, and it was great.
Tuesday my girlfriend and I experienced some drama, and it was not so great.
Wednesday, things at work were stressful. I need to have a talk with MY boss, and I’m not looking forward to that.
But tomorrow brings a brand new day…. 🙂
Anyhow, I wasn’t able to pull anything together for April Fools (other than the thread in the What Makes You Laugh forum– thanks to MrOats for his contribution!).
But I still want to do something to commemorate our 8th anniversary.
I really like the Magic 8 Ball idea. It’s fun, relevant and not too expensive. Question for our non-U.S. staffers — is the Magic 8 Ball “known” outside of the U.S.? Would people outside the U.S. “get it?”
As for a contest, we need to think of something. We held a referral contest once (didn’t MrEggsalad win?) and that was kinda interesting. Just a crazy thought — what about a series of contests? Eight contests in eight months, celebrating our eighth year? Then we could do a variety of things to stimulate repeat visits and participation.
We could have:
- a referral contest
- an arcade tournament
- a “most prolific” contest (for top poster over a period)
- a “top commenter” contest (in the “front” section of the site)
- a “top rated” contest for reputation points (again, maybe over a period)
- and so on…
Prizes could include a Magic 8 Ball, a NEW BBB t-shirt (maybe that’s ANOTHER contest– to design a new t-shirt?), software (maybe Trillian Pro license or ??) and possible even something like an iPod Shuffle (the budget is L-O-W).
What do you think? What sounds exciting? What sounds dull? What are YOUR ideas?
