I’m in the process of upgrading the forums, adding new functionality and making some pretty big changes here at Big Blue Ball.
Regulars will notice that the forum design looks rather plain vanilla. This is temporary as we update the design to match the new-and-improved forum software.
Along with the updates will come new features, including the ability to (optionally) connect your Facebook account. Why would you want to do this? Well, I recognized that many people use Facebook as their primary social hub, so I’m going to make it really easy for those of you to stay connected and up-to-date here, from there. In fact, one of the biggest changes is that you’ll be able to actually browse the forums, ask questions and post replies all inside of Facebook.
The other changes have more to do with the focus and intent of the site. When I started BigBlueBall originally, it was a sandbox where I could practice my coding skills. It was hosted on a Windows server and ran ASP, and served an entirely different purpose. In 2001, BigBlueBall underwent the first major change, as I shifted the focus to the vibrant, emerging instant messaging scene and added discussion forums.
In the 10+ years since, we have evolved to cover additional topics related to the social grid — including social networking and mobile technology — but the shine had worn off. Instant messaging has dropped in popularity and new sites have emerged to bring tech news and updates. MySpace came (and mostly went), and Facebook emerged as a powerful place to connect with your friends and family. The Internet — and the world — is a very different place from where it was in 2001.
I’ve changed as well, and it’s time for change at BigBlueBall.
We’re gearing up for a new focus in 2012 that looks the intersection of technology and what Tim Ferris calls lifestyle design. How can we make use of technology in a way that improves our relationships, our play, our work, our health, our bank account balance and most of all, our quality of life? BigBlueBall is going to address this and help you navigate this new world. In many ways, this is always what we’ve been about, but now it’s clear and upfront.
Buckle your seat belts and hold on tight! Get ready to join us for a fun, wild ride and design the lifestyle that you want!
