I’m the first to say play by the rules. I understand they exist for a reason. BUT, when it comes to being able to give rep, I’ve got issues. Twice recently, with 2 different people (both staff), I’d have liked to give rep against a particular post. However, since I’d given them some before, and have not spread enough love around, I can’t do it.
Now I know, in the past some people probably have given rep out willy nilly, or repped someone particular over and over to increase points. That’s likely the reason for the rules. But, I personally am not one to give it out unless I think a post really deserves it. I’d bet in the case of most staff members, we’d like to think that we know what we’re talking about (at least most of the time) and we likely hold the posts we’d give rep to to a reasonably high standard.
I’ll play by the rules and spread it around, but I’d like to say to Philip and Ven0m – I’d have given each one of your recent posts rep, but I can’t. So just know that I think you’re doing a great job! I’m sure by the time I find enough posts to give rep to, I’ll have forgotten which ones I was going to do, and I’m sorry I can’t give it now.
Rant over…..
April 5, 2008 at 7:15 pm #168588sarahtownyMemberI second your opinion Doris.
I have found myself in the same situation, maybe staff could be allowed to give rep without the same restraints as standard members?
If not, maybe we could give rep but it would not add to their score but the member would at least know you appreciated their input.
April 5, 2008 at 8:50 pm #168583Jeff HesterKeymasterThe reputation rules are highly configurable, and I will look at the current settings when I get back tomorrow. I am currently in the Costa Rica airport using my iPhone on wifi, otherwise I could do it now.
April 5, 2008 at 10:30 pm #168592PolarBearNPRParticipantAnother point on this might be that . . . well, there are only so many people making “rep”-utable posts. I, too had to spread it around before giving it again. Meh – doesn’t seem a big deal to me tho . . . (of course I am #2 atm)
April 6, 2008 at 7:57 am #168594PhilipModeratorWhy thanks for your rant, Doris. Staff rants are almost always constructive because it shows that they do care for BBB. I’m with you on all your points. And I’m sure our staff are mature enough to not abuse this rep power should it be given to them. To quote Uncle Ben in Spider Man: “With great power comes great responsibility.”
I’ve posted a poll with this thread to see what the others think.

Awww, thank you! 🙂 It’s the thought that counts. 😉

As you see, I can dial down the “spread it around” value from it’s current setting of eight, but it would do so for ALL members. I’m ok with experimenting with that, but I’m leery of setting it to zero.
Any thoughts on what a more balanced setting would be? Three? Four?
April 7, 2008 at 1:32 pm #168597Doris KenneyParticipantThanks for being willing to compromise Jeff. I agree, if it affects all users, dropping to 0 is probably NOT a good idea. I’ll meet ya in the middle and vote for 4.
Do we have any statistics on how much rep has been given BY users (compared to staff)? And perhaps TO members other than staff? Just curious.
April 7, 2008 at 11:04 pm #168593PolarBearNPRParticipant4, too
April 8, 2008 at 12:44 am #168595PhilipModeratorAgreed, 4 would be good.

Just curious.I must say if we could obtain those statistics, it wouldn’t surprise me to know that most of the rep being given out has come from the staff. I have a gut feeling that non-staff members hardly give out rep at all, let alone know what it is, but correct me if I’m wrong, Jeff.
April 21, 2008 at 1:19 pm #168590DermotParticipantTo be honest i don’t think i have ever given rep to anybody.
Maybe i did one of my sleepless nights but it’s never been something i’ve kept an eye on.
April 21, 2008 at 4:52 pm #168589sarahtownyMemberWhat! Dermot you naughty thing you :0)
*gives you rep*, so that you know what rep is, and you feel very happy getting one, so much so you are the best repper from now on!
Off with you now and get repping, you bad repper person! hehe :0)
April 21, 2008 at 6:25 pm #168585Jeff HesterKeymasterFYI – I’ve updated the “spread” settings to three.
