MemberYesterday for my birthday I went out to get some RAM to upgrade my PC. My PC is an HP Pavilion A1010n. It has a Celeron D Processor and it came with 512 MB’s of RAM in one chip. It has one extra RAM slot.
I went to crucial.com to check what I needed and we got that. Yesterday when I added the new 1 gig chip I got to the second RAM slot, and turned the computer on, it did nothing. It froze at the first screen I got.
Then I turned it off and on, and it went normally but before it got to the point where it would normally say “Windows XP starting up”, it had just a black screen that said couldn’t find system file or something and that I had to fix it from a CD. I got really nervous, turned the computer off, removed the new RAM chip I got, and started the comp up again and everything was normal.
Needless to say I was relieved but also afraid to try it again.
Anyone know what the problem could be? A friend suggested that perhaps my comp can’t take more than 1 gig, and that I should just remove the existing 512 MB ram chip and replace it with the new one I got.
I am afraid to do anything else before I get more expert advice.

ParticipantHP Pavilion a1010n Desktop PC – Product Specifications
What did you buy? Probably not PC-2700 DDR RAM. Remove the 512MB module and replace it with the 1GB module and it should be fine. Otherwise return what you bought and buy PC-2700 DDR RAM. Something like this should work: Newegg.com – pqi POWER Series 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Desktop Memory – Retail

MemberWell I solved the problem myself and with the help of other friends turns out because of my inexperience I didn’t put the RAM chip in far enough. I was paranoid and afraid to jam it in further out of fear of breaking it. I finally did it now and both chips are in and working and my RAM is tripled. Thanks for the help!

ParticipantAt least it’s working, you usually can return things that have been opened though…
