recently my Yahoo account was hacked By someone sending me a .exe file disgiused as a picture. I fell for the attempt and accepted the Pic.
My username and password were then sent to the hacker (a chat mate).And my password was changed so I cannot get access to the account, they have now asked for $100 to give the account back..I do not care about the account it is not that important, but I would like to know the name of the virus/ hacking tool that was used on my account..Any ideas??
All help appreciated.Who knows! You may have a trojan or a keylogger installed. They may be watching your every move.
Now for the lecture, you SHOULD BE MORE CAREFUL! Pictures never are sent as EXE files. Be more selective of your chat mates. And most importantly scan everything you download.
Okay you can do the secret question thing and get your account back. Just click on “forgot password” when you try to log onto that account. Just follow the steps Yahoo gives you. That should reset the account.
But it will not do you any good if you are trojaned or keylogged. You need to have your computer scanned. There are several free programs and scans out there so not having any or outdated protection is no excuse.
Goto http://free.grisoft.com for AVG free version. I prefer Norton Anti-virus, I have been using norton products for 16 years, so that is my preference, but it is not free. Others will recommend different anti-virus programs, it really doesn’t matter as long as you get protected. After installing an anti-virus program, make sure to update the definitions, or it will be of very limited use. Then run a scan immediately,

There are more but I can’t think of anymore off the top of my head. Scan your computer and remove anything that is infected.
You should keep track of all the processes running on your computer, that way you will know if something starts running that shouldn’t be. Goto http://www.winpatrol.com to help manage your running processes.

Another basic protection (which I think EVERYONE should do) is to permanently UNCheck “Hide Extensions for Known File Types”, which can be found under Start – Control Panel – Folder Options – View (that’s in XP anyway).
I could send you an EXE file called my-house.jpg.exe – with that option checked (which I think is Windows default) this might appear to you as simply my-house.jpg, which does indeed appear to be a genuine picture.
But make no mistake, it’s what’s after the LAST dot that truly shows the file type – in this case a (dangerous!?) EXE.
(In fact if ever you see a filname contain more than just the usual one dot, be Very Wary !)Studio maybe you did not read my post fully.
I said that the pic/.exe was sent by a “chatmate” so I did not really check what was being sent to me, it was addressed something like picture.jpg.exe
and I did not see the .exe part.
my pc is scanned once per week for viruses and spyware
nothing is ever found.I am just trying to find out the name so I can reserch it a bit more for a college project.

Well without seeing what you downloaded, or full information on your running processes, how are we supposed to know what kind of cooties you have? I can scan my computer with an anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, but if an infection isn’t in the definitions they are using, then they will not find anything. That is why I posted the many links for online scans. They are free and give a second opinion. Help us help you, try to give us more information, “it was addressed something like picture.jpg.exe”, is not very much to go on. There are several worms and trojans named “picture.jpg.exe”.
P.S. Most infections come from people you do know, friends get infected, worms take over address books then go down the list. So not scanning something just because you know somebody is no reason to not be careful.
Well I have encountered this trick before, luckily I did not downloaded the file. A user befriended me, chat for a while then told me she’ll be sending me her pic. I check my email then I saw the attahced file, it was Mypic.exe, whew!:p So I just reported the email as spam!
Well as you said, your ID and password were sent to the sender, sounding more likely an MPS, I just dont know why it was not picked up by your AV? Or maybe its a new variant of MPS? Try to look for the sender.exe file in your system, if im not mistaken, its the file that was used by earlier MPS.
