KeymasterI'm in the process of buying a new home, and looking to add some “smarts” to it. Being pretty closely tied to the Apple ecosystem already (MacBook, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Watch, etc.), I'm going focus on Apple's home automation solution — HomeKit.
What will I be automating? Here are a few ways:
- Home access with a lock that will automatically unlock when I approach the front door, automatically lock when I leave, and allow me to be alerted when the door is opened and who opened it.
- Security monitoring with cloud-based video review, allowing motion detection and recording and playback from my iPhone from anywhere in the world. Who's your Big Brother? 🙂
- Lighting automation. I'm primarily looking at controlling the brightness and creating “scenes” (adjust the lights for watching a movie or turn them on using geofencing when I arrive home), but also programming them for when I'm traveling.
That's probably it for starters. I considered looking at the ecobee wifi thermostat, but without air conditioning in the new home, I'm not sure the juice is worth the squeeze.
Have you automated your home? What have you used, and what has your experience been?
