September 8, 2004 at 10:26 pm #2404CharlesMemberQuote:quote:America Online launched on Wednesday the latest version of its instant messaging software, expanding support for sharing pictures and adding several subscription-based features. As earlier reported, AOL Instant Messenger 5.9 adds a collection of new features meant to encourage personalization of the messaging application, including animated buddy icons, sound effects and “wallpaper” images.
A handful of the personalization upgrades will be marketed via subscription, as AOL attempts to garner revenue from the software which it distributes for free via download. The company will charge $1.95 for a monthly subscription to its expanded package of personalization tools, dubbed as AIM Expressions, and offer a yearlong subscription to the service for $9.95. AOL is also selling its animated SuperBuddy icons for $1.95 each, or three for $4.95. The subscription IM business is part of AOL’s overall strategy for revenue diversification to supplement its declining dial-up ISP business.

AIM Download PageMy view: more junk from the AOL offices in an attempt to make money. 🙂 Some things never change…
September 8, 2004 at 10:34 pm #38538TropicalMemberI’m not upgrading.. 5.5.3595 is it for me.. I’m fine with 5.5 and it works well on my computer.
September 8, 2004 at 11:13 pm #38537SpikeMemberI’m willing to try this new version. I seriously doubt, thought, that anyone would pay for a “SuperBuddy” icon OR those AimExpressions. I wouldn’t. But the free aspects of AIM 5.9 look good. I wonder if Otsego will be compatible…
September 8, 2004 at 11:54 pm #38530ys8er2323Memberwow I cant even have an opionion because my posts keep getting deleted.
September 8, 2004 at 11:56 pm #38541QuiksilverMemberUnless the new buddy icons or the aim expression things ARE REALLY GOOD no1 wpuld buy them. Ever. What’s the point of having an icon that does stuff when you type? Sure it’ll be fun for…a day. After that you say to yourself why did I spend 2 dollars on this lil wee program? Give me a break. Waste of money. Stupid. If anyone buys an icon or expression let me know because I see NO reason to. Write me an essay why you did, if you did.
September 9, 2004 at 3:31 am #38532plastidcellsMemberAIM 5.2>*
just goes to show how greedy AOL is and how obsessed people are with instant messaging.September 9, 2004 at 7:30 pm #38531syntaxMemberBetter just to stick with a previous version such as 5.5 (with a modified aimres.dll to remove the ads and junk) or 5.2 with DeadAIM 3.2. I’d also rather use Trillian or GAIM, I’m not that into the new features anyways. You can always just download expressions from other sites like AIM X press
September 9, 2004 at 8:52 pm #38542QuiksilverMemberas most others say im sticking with 5.5 thats tru… its better. not as much junk as 5.9 cuz I am definitely not getting that, they probably added more places to put their ads as well. well if anyone does get 5.9 do share what its like. cuz 5.9 seems to be a pile of garbage and an attempt to make good money (which they will of course never get) sure we like aim, but we arent stupid enough to buy super icons and etc we use it to TALK not to waste money on. stupid stupid stupid people over at aol…
September 10, 2004 at 2:27 am #38550mynameisdougbMemberDoes anyone think someone will figure out how to make the Super Buddy icons though, so there will be a free website that offers them?
September 10, 2004 at 2:29 am #38552lara1111Memberi was searching google today about that, but I couldn’t find anything…
September 10, 2004 at 3:21 am #38539TropicalMemberThere is always a way. Some genius is going to figure out how. Someone always does. Just a matter of time.
September 10, 2004 at 9:07 am #38529Someguy03MemberI will actually start using this version once an addon comes out with a new update to make it support 5.9. I always like to have the latest version with AIMutation and Otsego, that way, your always up to date, and your AIM looks like 5.2.
September 13, 2004 at 12:42 am #38554KomodoMonsterMemberi cant even run anything above 5.2, lol. it wont connect for some reason.
i have XP Pro SP2

im trying to convert my friends to MSN messenger, the only customizeable thing its your icon and your font and ****, but I like it better than aim.is aim still giving free expressions to other coutries?? I know that u used to be able to install an australian version and get free expressions..
