I tried to log in to AIM today and was told that my password did not match. When I checked my Yahoo! e-mail a few minutes later, I noticed that my AOL password had been reset on Tuesday. I did not do this, so it seems that someone else had done it. I did not receive any e-mail asking me whether I wanted to proceed with the reset, so the “hacker” probably guessed my security answer. It looks like I’ve become a victim of social engineering. Incidentally, someone is also trying (albeit unsuccessfully, I hope) to gain access to my Yahoo! account, since I’ve received several password recovery e-mails over the last days. Has this happened to anyone else?
In any case, I was able to recover my account by resetting my password again. I also changed my security question just to be safe.
That’s good that you were able to recover your screenname. I’ve been the victim of a hack once or twice throughout my days of being a regular internet user. Lost a screenname here and there, I was young at the time, young and foolish. Didn’t care, just made another one. :p
Yeah, if you care about your accounts, it’s best to use strong passwords, change them periodically. And NEVER use the same passwords for anything really critical (like bank info). And always — when possible — use the https option for email, twitter, facebook, etc.
