MemberAIM installed Wild Tangent games along with its IM client. I allowed Wild Tangent access to the Net because I didn’t know what it was. Today I ran a spyware check with Spybot and it listed Wild Tangent as spyware. I got rid of all instances of WT except the driver folder, which couldn’t be removed because it’s in use.
Will uninstalling Wild Tangent cripple AIM? I know it’ll take away my ability to play games, but that’s not important, just being able to chat and use the webcam is important. Thanks.

MemberNo, removing all of Wild Tangent software will not cripple AIM, infact I recommend doing it after installing AIM. Hopefully in the future Wild Tangent software will nolonger be automatically installed with AIM.

Wild Tangent was the final straw for me to switch to something else. Its just like AOL all over again with the spyware and bloat and other stuff. Also while you are at it deleate a folder called AOD in Program Files for this is another thing AIM puts on your computer called AOL On Demand to try to get you to sign up for AOL service.
AOL cannot seem to get its act together! I left their OSP (Online Service Provider) and now I even have to leave their free service known as AIM. Its unfortinate also that jdennis.net also sold out to AOL because his program was very good at one time. I no longer deal with AIM/DeadAIM if I dont have to!

KeymasterWild Tangent is not currently considered a threat by AdAware. It does collect some usage data to send back to their central servers, but it doesn’t appear to be a real problem unless you’re a freak about that sort of thing.
The AdAware folks do acknowledge that “Wild Tangent is not targeted by AdAware at this time but is constantly under review.” The use something called a “Threat Assessment Chart” to determine what programs get targeted.
Of course, if you don’t care to play any of the Wild Tangent games that come with the latest AIM beta, then it’s a moot point. You can uinstall and disable Wild Tangent and it’ll make no difference to the operation of AIM.

Membernext time, you should try using the wildtangent uninstall in add/remove programs. this will uninstall it properly and then all you have to do is remove whatever is left over (usually the c:windowswt folder) i think theres even an option in wildtangent so that it doesnt update and doesnt send info to the servers. by the way, ive installed the last few builds of aim and wildtangent hasn’t installed.
ps: AOD (Aol On Desktop) is very annoying but not really harmful. i’m about to post a simple way to uninstall it so that you do not have to remove it manually.

MemberYes I am going to uninstall it tonight. I have no interest in AIM’s games. I like MSN’s games. I will also get rid of AOD.

Afraid I have to disagree Jeff.. Spybot does consider this spyware as it rightfully should. Its a pest and should be removed from AIM forever if need be. When Ad-aware wont take it out always go with a second opinion I always say.

Memberspybot thinks everything is spyware. its not a bad program, its just paranoid. i find myself leaving almost everything it detects because most of it is not harmful at all. if lavasoft considered it to be harmful they would include it. i do agree that its unnecessary though and totally safe to get rid of as long as you dont use the games.

Still better safe than sorry… I hope my computer is spyware free but I’m sure its not for all the other unknowns that come out weekly.
