AIM changed the way how you register your screenname. The email you sign up with now has to be valid. It has to be valid because in order to fully complete the registration you must respond to an email they send you. If you do not respond to it and you sign on with your new screenname you will be unable to IM anybody. They will not appear online and you won’t appear online to them.
This is why my old screenname broke.
I think everybody should know about this because it is a big change. You have to have a valid email address now, otherwuse your screenname will not work no matter how hard you try. It’ll sign on all right but that’s the end of it.
December 4, 2004 at 3:21 am #107151Someguy03MemberNone of my screenames with fake emails have stopped working. Are you sure this goes for screenames already registered?
December 4, 2004 at 3:26 am #107152QuiksilverMemberI’m not sure if it’s for screennames already registered. It might have come into effect sometime before I registered the screenname that broke. I haven’t tried any of my old screennames so I’ll go check that out. I can confrim that it is true however because I registered with a new screenname yesterday. I tried to sign on, it worked but I couldn’t IM anybody because there was no one online (or so it seems). Upon going on my other screenname I could IM people and see that they were online.
This is for people registering new screennames, do not use fake emails because your screenname will not work.
Here’s an actual copy of the email:

—That’s about it…
This should become a sticky because it’s pretty important for people siging up with new screennames nad wondering why they don’t work…
December 4, 2004 at 3:45 am #107153camsterMemberI got that email for my last registered screen name. I don’t see anything too dramatic changing for most people. Why would you give a faulty email to AOL? It doesn’t spam…and I don’t think that this affects old sns. This will also stop instant-sn makers that put in a random email from working.
