Hey Jeff, I think it would be very helpful and appropriate to add an “AIM Support: 6.0/Triton/AIM Pro” section and change the current one to “AIM Support: version 5.9 and prior”
This would be very helpful to keep things separated for us to answer questions, in addition to directing users to disclose their version–up-front–rather than having to ask which version they’re using. This would help me out a lot in the future so that when I fiddle with 6.0, I can focus on 6.0 issues more easily.
Also, what do you think about giving me mod privileges for the AIM area so that I can move threads if they’re posted in the wrong place? I’d also like to do a bit of cleanup in the AIM forums (removal of old stickies, deleting spam, updating information, etc) and add stickies when appropriate, such as: “AIM 6.0 threads moved” and explain that if a user’s thread is missing, it was most likely moved into the new forum area. I feel like I’m applying for a job, heh. If you’d like references, you can contact [email protected] or [email protected], as I’ve been a moderator on their forums since middle_man went public back in…2003, I think?

December 18, 2006 at 12:45 am #155416Jeff HesterKeymasterI think the separate forum is a great idea, and as for moving you up to an Advisor, it’s really up to Dave (eh Dave?).
One suggestion — assuming we go ahead with the forum reorg, you can create expiring redirects. It leaves a pointer to the new location, and automatically disappears when it expires (according to the date you set). We could move things over and then expire the redirects after a week. Does a week sound about right?
December 18, 2006 at 7:46 am #155419Jon8RFCMemberWow…expiring redirects must be a new feature in vBulletin 3.x, and that sounds like a good idea to have them expire after a week or no more than 10 days; people seem to be pretty anxious for responses and check up on their threads often. There are lots of threads, so having the redirects expire will help keep things clean.
December 18, 2006 at 2:24 pm #155415Jeff HesterKeymasterYeah, the expiring redirects is a newer feature. For reorg purposes, I’m suggesting seven days to expiration, only because a week sounds about right to me. If someone posts a topic or reply and expects an answer, they probably will come back within a week (just my hunch, not based on empirical evidence). If they don’t come back within a week, they probably won’t come back at all (again, just a hunch). But the redirects will also help people finding the (old) topic via Google, and it gives Google a week to catch up with us and index the new location (which they should do since they download our forum sitemap twice a day!).

Anyway, you’ve got my vote, Jon. In the past few days you’ve shown incentive, and not just in the AIM section. I think you deserve a promotion.
And, yeah, a week is what I set my ExpRed’s to, as well. It’s worked just fine in the past, so there’s no reason we shouldn’t continue to use that timeframe.
